Vikes Huron -Perth field hockey champs

After another undefeated regular
season on the pitch, the Goderich Dis-
trict Collegiate Institute (GDCI) Vi-
kings field hockey team wrapped up
their season play with a silver medal
performance at WOSSAA October
29.
"It was incredibly close," said coach
Ray Lewis. "Any of the top four teams
would represent us equally at OF -
SAA."
Vying for the top spot in Ontario's
western region were GDCI, Med-
way, Parkside and Huron -Perth rivals,
South Huron.
The Vikings lost the final to Med-
way 1-0 in a tight match.
Within the first five minutes, both
teams had hit the goalposts at both
ends, however, it was Medway who
scored first and held on to secure the
win.
Lewis said there is a lot of parity in
the top four teams, and any one of them
could have advanced to OFSAA.
Lewis said he was more stressful
watching the girls' Huron -Perth match
against South Huron Monday, Oct. 27.
In regular season the Vikes played to a
2-1 win over the Panthers, and all they
needed was a tie Monday to take the
HP championship.
A 0-0 tie meant the Vikings took
gold.
"I don't know how motivated our
girls were:: Lewis said last week.

we only needed a tie.

finals in Kitchener next weekend.
As for the Vikings' season next
year, Lewis said a good group of ath-
letes will be returning. though there
will be a few heavy -hitters gone from
the lineup.
"Our vets played incredible," he
said. "Our graduating players, as is
typical, when they're going out the
door you get their best performance"
He said veteran players Shelby
Moore, Kelsey Doherty and Kelsey
Johnston all deserve a nod, as well as
goaltender Jaden Mitchell, who has
already played for the team Ontario
U14 and U16 teams.
Lewis said the team is "a bit
spoiled" after years of ruling Huron -
Perth. However, with a number of
rule changes to the sport, this year had
challenges of its own.
"I guess the major rule change is
what's called the auto -pass rule," he
said. "Basically, it would be similar to
a free kick in soccer except you don't
have to kick it anymore. If you decide
you don't want to pass it you can just
take the ball."
The rule, he said, makes the game
move along faster. While younger
players just introduced to the sport
learn the rule as part of the game,
Lewis said the veteran players needed
some adjustment time, as well as a
change in strategy.
"It speeds it up dramatically," he
said. "That was probably one of our
weak points. We didn't execute it to
our advantage. That certainly showed
in the final."
All told, Lewis said their season was
a good one, with one exception:
"We lost one game all year and un-
fortunately it was the final."

reputation as a top school for
cross-country, he said it also helps
to attract students who are serious
about the sport.
"We've had a chance to have
success over the last half-dozen
years," he said. "One of the big
things is getting kids who have tal-
ent to run.
"Kids recognize St. Anne's .is a
school that excels at that."
