Michel Chikwanine, who was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is now a speaker with Me to We, headed by well-known Canadian activists Craig and Marc Kielburger. The organization, which operates in conjunction with international aid group Free the Children, works with school- children across the country to inspire them to think about the world around them. Chikwanine will address the St. Anne's stu- dent body, as well as representatives from oth- er schools in the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6. "Michel has endured obstacles and chal- lenges that no one should ever have to face in their lifetime," states a news release from Jodi Kuran, principal of the Clinton secondary school. "He was, most recently, a passionate speaker at We Day in Vancouver where 16,000 youth gathered to take action and change the world." It was a similar presentation — that time by Marc Kielburger — that inspired last summer's school -building trip by 18 St. Anne's students and three adult chaperones. The students raised $8,500 following a 2008 visit from the Me to We co-founder, then travelled to assist Free the Children in the construction of an elementary school in Kenya's Maasi Mara region. On Monday, Oct. 26, during a regular Hu- ron -Perth board meeting, Kuran and fellow chaperone Father John Jassica of Goderich, along with two of the student participants, presented a video and spoke about their expe- riences. "I've been to a lot of great places of the Church and of the Faith but, to me, this was a life -changing experience," Fr. Jassica told trustees. And participant Andre Egli spoke about realizing how little most Kenyan people have in comparison to the average Canadian, and about re-evaluating what's important in his life. The video is being shown at feeder elemen- tary schools for St. Anne's, as well as for Hu- ron County organizations that assisted during the fundraising drive. According to Kuran, the St. Anne's Me to We group has committed to an even greater fundraising goal for its next project: help- ing Free the Children construct a secondary school in the same district as the new elemen- tary school. An Education concludes film fest The Livery Film Fest concludes its Fall 2009 Series on November 5 at the Park Theater with An Education, winner of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival au- dience award. Set in London, England in the early sixties, An Education, is a gorgeous and nuanced coming -of -age tale with a su- perb fable -like quality. Carey Mulligan turns in a luminous performance as Jen- ny, a high school student prepping for Oxford until she meets David, a dashing older man who shows her the world. Of course, real life is nothing like dreams and the beauty of this movie is in the details. An Education never miss- es a beat as it explores its sensitive sub- ject matter and fully rounds out its very compelling main characters. An Education is presented in partner- ship with The Film Circuit and shows November 5 at the Park Theater in God- erich at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door.
