noon. Goderich firefighters were called to the accident scene to extricate the occupants of a

MVCA briefs local councils on erosion

The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority is
letting municipalities know what's going on in their
watershed areas.
Representatives from the conservation authority
were before Goderich council October 26 - the first
of many such presentations, according to MVCA
staff present.
Most of the presentation dealt with the 100 -year
erosion line - which the MVCA unveiled this August
at a special meeting at the Columbus Centre.
There were 216 people at the August meeting, a
mix of concerned residents and property owners.
"The point the group wanted to work towards was
the hundred -year erosion line," said Nathan Garland
of the MVCA. "Since 1983 a lot of work has been
done, particularly in Goderich."
Showing slides of the decrepit lighthouse stairs as
an example, Steve Jackson of the MVCA said any
structure built along the bluffs would have to be
flexible with nature. The bluffs are "Inherently un-
stable," he told council, and there erosion
"a natural process."
Fluctuating precipitation patterns, where
more rain fads over less time coupled with
more winter days above zero degrees makes
an n ideal situation for erosion, he said.
"It is going to have a significant influ-
ence on the bluffs," he noted. "To deal with
that we're going to need better preserva-
tion."
Noting the transformation of the Goder-
ich waterfront, Jackson said there is little
in the way of man-made retension struc-
tures to obstruct nature from taking a prop- ,
er course.
However, he said more needed to be done
to build up the watersheds of the Maitland
and Nine Mile rivers as weather becomes
more extreme and runoff more significant.
•
"We have to get used to structures being
he said.
One of the approaches the MVCA can take,
said, is to hold water back from
gullies as much as possible so
the runoff is regulated rather
than stopped altogether.
However, Jackson told coun-
cil, gullies in general, the hun-
dred -year line gives the picture
of where the natural settlement
of the land will be and it is up
to municipalities, buidling of- I 1
ficials and the conservation
authority to make sure no de-
velopment

takes place within
that line.
"It takes almost a commu-
nity approach," Jackson said.
"For property owners there is
no easy solution."
