Huron County men pay supreme sacrifice

William was born May 29, 1918
and grew up in Goderich on St.
Vincent Street. As a young man
he served in the Reserves with the
Middlesex Huron Regiment. Before
enlisting, he worked as a carpenter.
He enlisted into the Canadian Army
June 8, 1942 and on July 24, the Al-
gonquins landed on Normandy soil.
They were mainly used as shock
troops to lead the advance and with
the support of armour, to break the
force of German resistance.
On August 31, 1944, a large-scale
attack was planned for Bouchaute,
Belgium. At 16:45 hours, the Ger-
mans were hit with an artillery and
mortar barrage. At 19:30 platoons
were ordered to withdraw, suffering

Corporal Westbrook lost his life
for his country during the Battle
of Antwerp and the Battle of the
Scheldt. He was straddling the bor-
der between Belgium and Holland
when he was brought down, and his
comrades took him from the front
lines to the regimental field ambu-
lance and most likely, the casualty
clearing station.
Corporal Westbrook succumbed
to his wounds at No. 15 Canadian
Field Ambulance.

in British military hospital

Issac was born in Exeter on Febru-
ary 3, 1905 and served with the militia
in the Huron Battalion from 1923-25.
He had been a truck-driver/mechanic
and had worked in a bakery.
He enlisted into the Canadian Army
in London Nov. 25, 1939. He com-
pleted his basic training and was then
posted overseas and embarked from
Canada during the summer of 1940
and landed at Plymouth, England.
Private Harness was a cook for the
3rd Infantry Brigade.
While he was in England he be-
came very ill and during the winter
of 1943 was diagnosed with cancer of
the pancreas and stomach. He was ad-
mitted to No. 4 Field Ambulance and
then No. 14 General Hospital in Feb.
1943.
He lost his battle with the disease
at 1 1:20 on June 15, 1943 at Harley
Military Hospital in Burstow, Surrey.
The Royal Canadian Army Service
Corp were the branch of the army that
brought supplies to the front lines,
such as ammunition, gasoline for the
artillery, armour and infantry. They
also brought all the food and sup-
plies forward, often using three -ton or
10 -ton trucks along with 40 -ton tank
transporters.
