The GPMC quarterly report states 89 vessels loaded or off-loaded dur- ing the last quarter alone, from July to September, as well as saw the un- expected docking of a cruise ship this summer. Wharfage fees were down for the quarter and the year, with about $40,000 difference over the same time last year. However, expenditures are also low for the year-to-date, nearly $35,000 less than anticipated. The main commodities being shipped are salt, grain and calcium chloride. • "Overall, we've been fine this year," said GPMC president Al Ham- ilton. "The port here isn't driven by some of the same economic factors that are causing ships to be tied up." The town, together with the GPMC, have been trying to procure funding for an estimated $40 million project through the Building Canada fund. The two-thirds funding program would provide funds to reclaim 15 acres of land in the north harbour. The first attempt through the Build- ing Canada Communities fund was turned down this June, however an- other request was sent through the major infrastructure component of the funding program. The application was sent in August and town staff and the GPMC are awaiting a response from the federal government. Terms of reference for the project had been completed in September, and the environmental assess- ment process is moving along as well. Meanwhile, Hamilton said there was little in the way of work being done at the port, and crews are currently wrap- ping up small maintenance jobs before the winter sets in. Any major work, he said, is tied up in the Building Canada Photo by Dave Sykes Long haul The ocean-going vessel, lryda, Limassol, of the Polsteam Shipping Agency, arrived in Goderich port at 8 a.m. Sunday morning from Milwaukee and will be taking on a load of soybeans destined for the Middle East. The Polish vessel should be loaded with between 15,000 and 25,000 tonnes of soybeans and i3 expected to clear port Wednesday morn- ing. The Polish vessel also accommodates passengers. application. "There is not a lot on the go here. We've done some concrete work on the south pier and some work on the fendering on the north pier," he said. "We haven't done a lot of major work here because we were waiting to see what would happen with the expan- sion project." Last year, there were more than 260 ships through Goderich, includ- ing two year-round residents - the CSL Tadoussac and the Frontenac. Should Goderich again be home to wintering lakers, it would mean fish- ing vessels would have to use Snug Harbour because of space limitations from the gigantic freighters.
