HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-11-04, Page 8Page 8 - Goderich Signal -Star, Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Saily kettle campaign seeks community volunteers Andrews said the higher goal reflects the "huge increase" of people using the food bank this year. Over the past five years, both food bank and Family Services usage has tri- pled, and Andrews said this one month of fundraising can literally help thou- sands of people throughout the year in Huron County. In tandem with the kettle campaign, the Salvation Army is also getting their Christmas hamper program up and run- ning for 2009. Applications can be made through the Goderich Salvation Army location at 309 Suncoast or in Clinton at 18 Albert Street. The phone numbers are (519) 524-2950 and 482-8586 respectively. Andrews said for people who want to help, time is just as important as money, be it time on the kettles or help packing and delivering hampers. "If you can't afford to give money, you can give your time - it's worth just as much," she said. Hamper applications, she said, are accepted until Dec. 14. Gerard Creaes signal -star staff No sooner does November hit than thoughts turn to the Christmas season, and the Salvation Army is looking for some help with their annual kettle cam- paign. Beginning November 19, the famil- iar kettles will be at specific locations around Goderich. Captain Krista An- drews said families, church and service groups and businesses can sponsor a kettle for a day by providing volunteers to man the locations. There are 250 kettle shifts to fill, An- drews said, manned by more than 150 volunteers. The Kettle Campaing begins Thurs- day, November 9 and continues through to December 23. Andrews said the money raised pro- pels the Salvation Army outreach ef- forts into the next year, and stressed all the money raised locally stays local. This year, the goal for the kettle cam- paign is $43,000 - an increase over last year's $37,000. THE COIN SHOP AT SUNCOAST MALL HWY 21 GODERICH Sunday Nov. A 12.-4:00 Monday Nov. 9 10 . 4:00 Tuesday Nov. 10 10 - 3:00 Police tag minors in rash of alcohol related charges Huron OPP handed out more than 10 tickets on the weekend in relation to li- quor violations, with startling results. What concerned OPP most is almost all of the incidents involved minors who were either in possession of liquor, con- suming liquor or who had open liquor in a motor vehicle. The youngest offender was a 12 -year- old female. This dangerous Huron County trend needs to be addressed at all levels, states the OPP, but first and foremost by par- ents. It's not acceptable to state that "Huron County is a boozing county. That's just the way it is." Although the consumption statistics for Huron County are alarming, that does not mean that residents should merely accept or embrace them - it is a parent's responsibility to protect their kids until they are old enough to make more informed decisions. Police say the message needs to be clear that alcohol and automobiles is unacceptable. However, a big part, ac- cording to the OPP, is parents leading by example. Luckily no one was injured in any of theweekend incidents. Especially, in the case of one 22 -year-old male who was lucky he was not hit by a vehicle while walking in the middle of the roadway in dark clothing at night.
