Company guides showed the visitors bow the basic ice blocks were formed - using reverse osmosis technol- ogy - to remove all impurities and most of the air from municipal water pumped into the plant. The main ware- house was fully refrigerated to store the finished blocks until they were transferred to the sculpting workshop. The computer aided design and manufacturing system ensured that the intricate carvings could be created by special routing machines; although many of the finished products were also hand carved. Innovative methods using coloured snow added to the uniqueness of the carvings. Following a tour of the shipping and lo- gistics area, the visitors were welcomed by Julian Bayley, who projected a slide show highlighting the company's history and its impressive list of international accomplish- ments. Julian also welcomed questions from the audience. Iceculture is looking toward the future with plans for the continuation of its renowned ice carving training facility; an ice sculpture museum, and further collaboration with NASA to supply precisely shaped ice `projectiles' used for testing the efficiency of the Space Shuttle structure. The IAM Local 1863 Retirees Club meets every third Wednesday of the month at the Saltford Valley Hall starting at 10:00 a.m. New members are always welcome, so please visit, meet your friends over fresh coffee, and enjoy some of the varied programs.
