The Goderich District Collegiate In-
stitute Senior Boys Volleyball team has
ramped up their season medal collection
in the past two weeks. After spending
October 16-17 down at the Chatham -
Kent Invitational tournament, the boys
are gearing up for their final two weeks
of Huron -Perth league play with fantas-
tic results.
After mediocre pool play, the Vi-
kings rebounded in an astounding way,
and walked away from the CK tourna-
ment as consolation champions beating
schools much larger than them. Despite
two injuries to their starting line-up, the
entire team came together to beat Essex,
Wallaceburg, Thornlea, Christ the King,
Macgregor and Uxbridge.
Using the down-time from a gap in
their season's league play, the Vikings
healed and came back with a vengeance
as they hosted their 15th annual invita-
tional tournament this past weekend at
GDCI.
Tournament entrants included a few
Huron -Perth teams, Rockway Mennonite
from Kitchener, Scared Heart, Saugeen,
Peninsula Shores, Wallaceburg, Kincar-
dine, and Owen Sound CVI.
Taking the top two spots in Pool 'A'
were South Huron and St. Anne's, and in
Pool `B' was Goderich, and Kincardine.
In the semi-finals, Kincardine sent South
Huron home, while Goderich beat St.
Anne's two straight sets with scores of
25-8 and 25-21 to advance to the finals.
The finals saw Goderich match back up
with Kincardine whom they had already
defeated in their pool, as well as every
other time they have met up this season.
In true Viking style, the boys pounded
back with contributions from outside
attackers Sean Dawson, Zach Doherty,
Scott McGee, Derek Saundercock and
Andrew Fickling. Kincardine couldn't
handle solid attacking from middles Joel
Doherty, Jesse Willis, Spencer Jones and
.Anthony Alcorn. Consistent passing and
defence from libero Tom Dawson let set-
ters Aaron VandenHeuvel, Teil Pitblado
and Tyler Durst run many different at-
tack options that left Kincardine guess-
ing. Goderich defeated Kincardine two
straight sets scoring 25-12, 25-19 to cap-
ture the gold medal.
"The boys are playing well at this point
in the season, and we look forward to re-
turning to the gym to work hard in order
to keep our undefeated league record,"
said coach Kristy Phillips. "They have
really stepped up in the last few tour-
naments and despite our injuries have
shown our opponents no mercy."
The team heads into two important
league matches this week on Tuesday in
Stratford against Stratford Central and
F.E. Madill. The team plays their House
of Blue on Thursday at GDCI against St.
Mikes and Central Huron. Game time is
2:30 p.m.
