Regan Bezaire and Sadie Chalmers hunker down in their small shelters to prepare for a night on the
street. The duo was part of a group of teens who were experiencing homelessness first-hand Oct. 23.

Huron -Perth youths learned just how rough
life on the streets could be on Saturday, as ten
students and five chaperones spent the night
homeless on Saturday, October 24.
Led by Pastor Gwen Macdonald of North
Street United Church, "Sleeping in the Streets'
saw participants learn where homeless indi-
viduals can be, where they can panhandle ef-
fectively, how long they can stay at businesses
with purchases, and ended with the group
camping out underneath the stars.
Cassandra Phillips -Grande, who, along with
her sister, helped organize the event with Pas-
tor Macdonald, said that the project saw its
start thanks to a visitor to North Street United
Church three years ago.
"The event was inspired by homeless man
that we found sleeping next to the church,"
Phillips -Grande said. ''Everyone had a picture
of that man to help remind us what the night
was about."
Phillips -Grade said that the event was also
inspired by the GO Project, which she took
part in.
"We went to inner-city missions in Toronto,
and worked in kitchens," she said. "We got to
see what things were like there."
The group learned a lot, according to Phil-
lips -Grande, and have a new-found respect for
the need to help homeless people find a place
to stay.
"The most important thing is, sleeping out-
side might seem fun in the summer or spring,"
she said. "But it's far from fun in the winter. It's
hard to find shelters and materials, and its hard
to stay warm."
The event is planned to be repeated next year,
according to Phillips -Grande, and the group of
youths, responsible for it is also planning more
retreats like the GO program. Interested youth
can contact the church at 519-524-2104 and
ask for Holly, or drop by the church.
