The Christmas season is rapidly ap-
proaching, and welcoming it in with fes-
tive flair again this year is the 10th an-
nual IODE Christmas Home Tour.
Five are homes are set to deck their
halls with the help for decor savvy spon-
sors and IODE members November 14
and 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as part of
the chapter's largest fundraising event.
Homes this year range in age from a
modern 1974 vacation homenestled in
Goderich's west end on Cobourg Street
to the regal splendor of a Cameron Street
1862 Victorian. While each will be out-
fitted in the areas best holiday finery, the
tour also spotlights the uniqueness of a
handful of Goderich's homes each year,
something organizer Peggy Ireland says
has turned the tour into an anticipated
getaway for many.
"People from all over Southwestern
Ontario come to the Home Tour," Ire-
land said, pointing out event patrons
who are known to travel from Sarnia,
Owen Sound and Toronto and points in
between. "They make a weekend of it."
She said the tour success is drawn
from a couple of factors equally. Some
are delighted to wander through a holi-
day wonderland and take decorating
ideas home with them, while others, she
do in cold and soggy November," Ire-
land added.
The 2009 circuit includes homes
found within Goderich, and this year the
Library will play host to the tour's end
reception area. In the past, the Library
Your $15 ticket grants you access to five of
Goderich's unique homes on Nov. 14 and 15. The
IODE asks that visitors refrain from taking photos
while on the tour. Bring along a plastic bag to put
your shoes in. Set aside a good two or three hours
to allow yourself enough time to visit each home,
or, spread your time evenly over both days. Watch
out for the IODE's Home Tour location markers,
wooden snowmen, at the curb of each residence.
Short wait times are not unusual at bustling home
locations.
said, revel in the chance to peek inside
some of the towns most enviable doors.
"It's also something that's just nice to
has benefited from the tours success, as
funds raised from the Home Tour have
gone back to the community through
donations and contributions. The IODE
have helped fund major community
projects like the Sallows Gallery, and
the hospital's Palliative Care Suite. The
chapter also supports a literacy class at
a First Nations school in Northern On-
tario.
It's all part of the chapter's mandate,
to service community and its children as
well as to promote literacy.
"We manage to give away all of our
money every year," Ireland said with a
smile.
Goderich's Maple Leaf chapter of the
IODE is one of the most vibrant and
active in the country, and according to
Ireland, the reason is their ability to con-
sistently raise money and donate to
meaningful projects, something she said
draws people to their initiatives.
"It's like a circle— our ability draws
people, which generates our ability."
Tickets are available at Fincher's on
The Square, the Goderich Library, or
through IODE members. See next week's
edition of the Goderich Signal -Star for
full details.
