Red hot
It was a tough choice, but Kate Lloyd -Rees (right) came out
on top as the reddest of the Bluewater Babes Red Hats at
their Miss Octoberfest pageant held at the Parkhouse
October 21. Edie Allaster, Pat Sheppard and Judy Keightly
also took honours.

E -waste collection exceeds expectations

They could not have picked worse
weather for the job, but workers
from My Old PC's Computer Recy-
cling Depot were kept smoking busy
at their free, three-day e -waste col-
lection depot in the Wal-Mart park-
ing lot from Thursday to Saturday.
My Old PC president, Ryan
Shaughnessy, said the depot was
one of the busiest the company has
had yet.
"Oh my goodness was that in-
sane," he said. "I thought we'd get
a week's worth of what we did in
Waterloo.
"It was a month's."
All told, Goderich residents
dropped off about eight trucks worth
of old computers and televisions in
just three days.
The load was about 60 per cent
televisions and 40 per cent comput-
ers. Shaughnessy said part of the
reason the drop-off was so popular
is because it was free, and secondly,
because there are no such depots in
the area.
Rather, residents would have to
pay for disposal at the Mid -Huron
Landfill.
The only goods that can be col-
lected at depots are those which al-
ready have a disposal fee paid at the
register. That meant microwaves and
other appliances were not covered.
"Only items which you pay an
eco -tax on at first can be recycled for
free," he said. "You'll pay that fee on
electronic items at the store."
The recycling program is part of
the Ontario Electronic Stewardship
program, and all collected waste
goes there for either recycling or re-
furbishing.

Shaughnessy said there are future
Goderich depots in the works, fol-
lowing the sheer volume of goods
collected this run.
"I think what we can tell right
now, it's worth it to come up a cou-
ple times a year," he said. "That's
what I think the area would respond
well to"
In April, Shaughnessy said phase
two of the recycling program begins,
bringing with it a longer list of what
can be accepted.
Phase two will include cameras,
audio-visual equipment, scanners
and cell phones.
While schools and charitable or-
ganizations can apply for collected
materials, the ultimate decision rests
with the OES.
