Lions Harbour Park is all systems
go for the installation of new wash-
rooms and upgrades to the bandshell
area.
At an October 5 meeting of be-
tween the project architect, Lions
Club members, town staff and mem-
bers of the artistic community met to
go over the geotechnical engineer's
report and enter into the planning
phase for the project.
"They made a decision at that time
where they would locate the new
public washrooms," project architect
Adolfo Spaleta said. "Now the new
building can be designed, which is
what I'm working on"
Atkinson Davies is the geotech-
nical firm handling the engineering,
and their report was critical to the
location of the new washrooms.
In order to comply with not only
building code by conservation
guidelines, the new washrooms will
be built between the gazebo and the
ring road at the park, based on the
setback lines provided by Atkinson
Davies.
"They let us know how stable the
land is on that side of the park and
how close we can build," he said.
"The existing bandshell is very close
to the sloping land."
As for the solidity of the bandshell,
Spaleta said there is some work to be
done getting it up to code, however,
the structure itself is sound.
"Given it was built in the 1970s, it
is in relatively good shape," Spaleta
said. "We found when you compare
it to current building standards, there
are things missing!'
Additions such as guard rails
on all stairs, as well as making the
stage and washrooms in the band -
shell wheelchair accessible are not
associated with any degradation to
the structure, Spaleta pointed out -
rather, they reflect the changing of
the times.
The Town of Goderich will be
looking at putting new water servic-
es in the park so the ball can get roll-
ing on the washroom design, Spaleta
said.
In the meantime, he said there are
some signs of wear and tear on the
bandshell.
"There's indications of cracking
on the walls of the existing band -
shell, which may be related to settle-
ment over the years," Spaleta said.
"The main intention behind the
upgrades was to make a wheelchair
accessible ramp to the stage and im-
prove the functionality of the band -
shell area. "The structural side of it,
we'll have to do a bit more digging
there."
Design work will be done over the
fall and winter so that work can be-
gin in the spring.
Groups such as the Celtic Festival
and the Laketown Band would like
to see the facility completed by late -
June, early -July.
Under the Recreation Infrastruc-
ture Canada (RINC) and Recreation
Ontario (REC) funding programs,
both senior levels of government
have committed $223,352 for the
project, with the Lions donating
$100,000 and the Town of Goderich
filling in the remainder to total of
$670,056.
The original bandshell cost about
$24,000 to build more than 30 years
ago.

now spread person-to-person worldwide in
much the same way that a regular influenza
spreads.
"We're asking other members of the
public to honour the need for those at high
risk to be first to be vaccinated,". said Medi-
cal Officer of Health Dr. Nancy Cameron.
"There will be enough vaccine for everyone
and we're offering many clinic dates in No-
vember for the public, so please be patient."
Those who are eligible to receive shots
this month can visit one of the clinics at the
JMB between now and Nov. 6. Vaccines are
available on specified days through the week
from 2 to 7 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Health care workers are also an identified
priority group. The health unit and health
care workplaces are working together to de-
velop a plan for H1N1 immunization. There
is a special H1N1 vaccine for women who
are less than 20 weeks pregnant. It will be

The general public can get their H1N1
shot at one of the many clinics in Novem-
ber.
"H1N1 is a new virus and can be a serious
illness, particularly for those in the priority
groups who are at higher risk. This vaccine
is safe and effective." Cameron said. "We
know H1N1 flu virus is here — people at
high risk of complications from the flu are
encouraged to get to one of the clinics in the
next two weeks."
Cameron added it may be easy to get con-
fused about who should get their vaccine
and when.
"People should go to our web site, check
the newspaper and listen to radio to know
when the clinic best suited to them will be
held."
Clinic dates are on the health unit web site
at www.huroncounty.ca/health.

auction. Also thank you to our fundraising committee, Jan Vogel,
Constance Russo, Brenda Shelton, Rachel Lynn, Karen Poulter, Jenna
Becker, Craig Nigh, Carol Bean, Karen Moore and Sylvia Hall. You
