Deadlines: Friday @ 2 p.m. Author shares memories of growing up John Hardy will debut his new book, Harvest Dust, on Oct 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Reuben R. Sallows Gallery. Hardy, well- known for his railway books, Canadian Rail Travel and Rusty Rails, has pulled together a rich book of photographs and short stories documenting tales of grow- ing up in Colborne Township on his fam- ily's farm. He will also be at the Gallery on October 24 at 2 p.m. to give a reading from his book, answer questions and sign copies of his work. Hardy's grandfather, Ed Hardy, was photographed by Reuben Sallows in the early 1900s on the same farm John Hardy grew up on. Images of Ed Hardy and the Hardy farm have been featured in many agriculturally -themed exhibits put on by the Sallows Gallery and in posters and pamphlets put out by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and the Canadian Depart- ment of Immigration, who commissioned Sallows to take agriculturally themed pho- tographs in the early 1900s. It will be released later this month. vest Dust explores through photographs and Hardy's ''ort stories, life on a rural farm between 1913 and 1976. He tells not only the stories of his life on the farm, but also the exploits of his grandparents. These small, mixed farms raised livestock, produce and grains for themselves and the local markets with the excess sold in the local mills, which then transported it by rail or boat across the country. Hardy captures that independent spirit in his stories. The one in which his grand- mother uses a few dropped oat kernels to grow fields of quality oats speaks volumes about the thriftiness and ingenuity of the Hardy family. The stories on their own are wonderful gems but illustrated with family photos, taken by John with his first camera or his parents with their first Kodak make this a treasured volume of history, unique and revealing. It is written in the old-fashioned style of memoir that is neither too icky-personal or too saccharin -sweet. It reminds one of the newspaper articles and small booklets written by the pioneers of this area in the early 1900s.
