BMO Financial group is preparing to
host a spook-tacular bowling event in
Goderich to support Kids IIelp Phone.
Boo-la-thon, an annual fundraiser for
the Kids Help Phone, will be held at
Goderich Little Bowl at 204 Huron Road
in Goderich on October 25, 2009. It will
run from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Kids Help Phone is a toll-free, 24-hour
bilingual, anonymous phone and web
counseling service that provides infor-
mation and referral services for children
and youths.
The fundraiser is being held in 35
communities across Canada to help fund
the services that more than 10,000 vol-
unteers, and 100 full-time and part-time
counsellors provide through the Kids
Help Phone.
Last year the Kids Help Phone pro-
videdassistance to 2.2 million callers,
e-mails, and web -site visits across 3,000
communities. Each question is estimated
to be ready by 78 different visitors.
Locally, according to Phil Wench, man-
ager of marketing and fund development
for the Kids Help Phone, the Grey -Bruce -
Huron Area Kids Help Phone helped kids
10,000 times last year, and that service
is very important, especially in smaller
centers.
"With young people in smaller com-
munities, you don't have the same broad
spectrum of services available some-
times, and even if you do, there's always
a problem with people not wanting to be
seen looking for help," Winch explained.
Kids Help Phone has renewed their ef-
forts to help kids, but they're really fo-
cusing on rural and smaller towns.
"We're really glad to provide the same
service, regardless of location," he said.
"The service is the same whether a caller
is in Dungannon, Clinton, Hensall, To-
ronto, or other big cities."
Goderich has $5,000 goal set, to con-
tribute to the approximately $11 million
that keeps the Kids Help Phone Running.
Last year, the Boolathon raised $566,000
nation-wide.
Kids Help Phone runs without formal
advertising, relying on unconventional
mediums, such as having their number
printed on chocolate bars, or having their
information shown after music videos
by bands and artists such as Jann Arden,
Simple Plan, and The Wilkinsons.
Interested participants can register at
kidshelpphone.ca/boolathon, and then
collect pledges from friends, co-workers,
and families, as well as organized fund-
raisers prior to the event.
