Home My WebLink AboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 2009-10-21, Page 27Less players, but same teams as last year for minor hockey _Gerard _Creams signal -star staff Goderich Minor Hockey is ramping up for the 2009-2010 season, and . president Tom Vance said games should be starting for all teams within the next two weeks. Many of the boys teams have already started their season, and the girls teams will be getting on the ice this week. There are 270 kids from Goderich and area enrolled this year, down a little from last. However, Vance said the. number of teams is the same, with smaller .rosters on each. "We've got 14 teams plus house league and development," he said. "We've got roughly the same amount of teams but they are smaller teams" Goderich will be fielding one midget boys team, three bantam, peewee and atom boys teams and a novice squad in addition to four girls' teams. Vance said the drop in numbers can in - part be attributed to the age group. "Once you get into peewee, bantam and midget, they get other interests and don't want to be tied down to hockey," he said. Early on, there was some difficulty in get- ting enough coaches for the Goderich teams, however Vance said every team now has a coach, thanks to the commitment of area parents. "We had a bit of trouble getting coaches," he said. "But parents stepped up and are now taking the coaching course" This year's executive has the same nucleus as other years, Vance said, with the addition of a few new people in key positions - him- self included. He credits Joanne Johnston with getting the ice time or- ganized for all the teams, es- pecially for the older players, who often have their games later -on. "It's a little harder because we're top-heavy on older teams," he said. "But she's done a good job of it, being able to get everybody in." While Vance said there is not much currently on the slate for fundraising yet, Goderich Minor Hockey is looking into potentially hosting a National Women's Hockey League game, similar to one held five years ago. However, for now, it's time to lace up and hit the ice for another season of Sailors and Sailorettes on Goderich ice. For teams, times and contacts, visit goderichminorhockey.ca.
