Wal-Mart supports Juno Beach centre
Goderich's Wal-Mart is playing host to a fundraiser for the Juno Beach Centre in
Normandy, France. Through encouraging customers to donate at checkout, and hav-
ing Legion members do the same , the two groups are raising money to help the
educational center, which teaches visitors about the military actions that took place
during World War II at the location. Shown is Wal-Mart General Manager Ben Van
Avery with Legion members Lloyd Eisler, Bev Lithgow, and Adrian and Paulette
Theriault, who were collecting donations for the fundraiser on Friday, October, 16. As
of press time, the fundraiser had roa;hed $2,300 of it's $3,000 goal.
Aerial memorabilia requires
more space says COPA
Recent letters and news articles
published in the Goderich Signal
Star brought attention to readers
about Eugene McGee's extensive
collection of artifacts and memora-
bilia from the Port Albert airfield
and training base during the Second
World War. Almost 80, Eugene's
wish is the collection be moved in its
entirety from his home to a suitable
location. Some COPA (Canadian
Owners and Pilots Association) 45
members felt the collection should
be exhibited beside the Sky Harbour
Gallery in the terminal building.
With that thought, the Executive
contacted local historian Paul Car-
roll to speak at the October meeting
to pursue this possibility. Also asked
to attend were Eugene McGee, Beth
Ross, Deb Shewfelt, Ben Vandiepen-
beek, and MP Ben Lobb.
Meanwhile, on a sunny Saturday,
September 19, the COPA 45 mem-
bers visited Eugene's home to view
the collection. "Impressive!" "Un-
believable!" were words expressed
at the vastness of original artifacts
and archival information there. Af-
terwards, the members met to dis-
cuss the physical possibilities of
relocation.
At our meeting, Paul talked about
preserving history, its importance,
rewards and problems. Huron Coun-
ty was unique with the four training
bases of Goderich, Port Albert, Clin-
ton and Centralia within its borders.
This meeting was a chance to dis-
cuss the Port Albert collection and
options for its new home. Carroll is
convinced that if the planning is in
place, the appropriate resources will
be there when needed.
Various ideas, comments and sug-
gestions were expressed during the
discussion from guests and mem-
bers. We now know heritage re-
quires County decisions, with sup-
port from the local municipalities.
COPA
COPA 45 members agreed to meet
to write letters to local governments
and designated others to consider
the shortcomings within the terminal
building -and a proposal to expand
the Gallery space to hold the McGee
collection and possibly others.
