In a unanimous vote,
Brockton Mayor Charlie
Bagnato won the Federal
Liberal nomination for the
Huron -Bruce riding, which
took place at the Lucknow
Community Centre, on Oct.
15.
With a total of 410 votes
cast, the community centre
was filled with many people
from around the area who
came to support their nomi-
nee. Dr. Maarten Bokhout
from Clinton, a former medi-
cal officer of health for Huron
County and Deb Homuth of
Exeter, a former principal of
Goderich District Collegiate,
were the other two nominees
seeking election to the posi-
tion.
Former Liberal Huron -
Bruce MP Paul Steckle was
on hand to give his support to
the three nominees and was
impressed with the speeches
they gave to support their
campaigns.
"I thought they were ex-
cellent speeches. Three dif-
ferent people, bringing three
different perspectives to
what they see for the riding,"
said Steckle. "I thought the
speeches were well given,
well delivered and well in -
tentioned. I will feel much
better once the riding is back
to the Liberal party and any
one of these nominees is ca-
pable of that.
Bagnato was the eventual
winner of the night and plans
to use his six years of experi-
ence as the mayor of Brock-
ton to be a strong candidate
for the Liberal party in the
next federal election.
Bagnato, in his speech, re-
ferred to himself as a lifelong
Liberal and aims to improve
a variety of issues from ag-
riculture, the environment,
sustainable energy, Great
Lakes improvement and the
auto sector. One of the major
issues Bagnato would like to
resolve in the Huron -Bruce
area is job creation and he be-
lieves improvement in all of
the aforementioned areas will
bring jobs to the riding.
"The retraining of people,
it isn't really happening at the
moment. I think we should
have satellite Georgian Col-
leges, so that people who have
lost their jobs in Wingham,
Goderich .and all over the
area could be getting courses
to retrain," said Bagnato. "It
would get them ready for
the new green economy and
I don't see it happening right
now and I fear these people
will end up in Kitchener,
London and Toronto because
there isn't enough work in the
area. I think that is a key prob-
lem right now"
Bagnato ran a hard cam-
paign and he was happy he
landed the nomination and
was relieved there isn't an
upcoming federal election
because he knows he has to
build on his campaign and get
his message out there.
Bagnato was very gracious
to his fellow Liberal nomi-
.nees because.. he knew how
;hard Bokhout and Homuth
worked on their campaigns.
He also hopes that the three
can get together to help make
the Liberal brand stronger in
the Huron -Bruce area leading
up to the next election.
For all three nominees
it was a long five weeks of
campaigning and for Bagnato
who came out with the vic-
tory, he was pleased but tired
and ready for some relaxation
before going back out on the
campaign trail.
"I think for right now I'm
going to go home tonight,
take the dogs for a little walk,
enjoy a glass of wine with my
wife and then get some much
needed rest," said Bagnato.
