Getting diagnosed with diabetes can be a frightening experience for many people. Getting diagnosed with diabetes and not having a family doctor can make it even more frightening. There are many things to learn when someone is diagnosed by diabetes and often many changes need to occur. For example, medication(s) may be required and lifestyle changes are often needed. We are fortunate to have services for patients without a doctor in the Goderich area. At Alexandra Marine & General Hospital there is an Orphan Diabetic Clinic for patients diagnosed with diabetes who don't have a family physician. Several of these clinics are available each month and the same physician will see patients at every clinic, allowing for consistency in the person's health care. The doctor will provide education, referrals, prescriptions and many other services. There is also a diabetes nurse and dietitian available to help guide the person with diabetes to acquire knowledge about diabetes. Fortunately, if you don't have a family doctor, you don't have to try to navigate your health care on your own. To learn more about these services or to book an appointment call 519-524-8689 ext 5292. , •ST. VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU!! CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING IN THE HOME IS 100% PREVENTABLE. Managing risk factors focus of Healthy ivi.ng evernng signal -star staff The fall leg of the Healthy Living Education Series ended with the "I'm Healthy, Right? How do I measure up?" event held at North Street United Church on Wednesday October 14. Featuring events such as blood pressure tests, blood sugar tests, and diet advice, the event was headlined by Dr. Joe Ennett, who spoke about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and managing risk factors, as well as provid- ing information about how to benefit from good health. The event drew in fifty people according to Joan Hutton, one of the organizers. "[We had] a number of health stations set up around the room which gave the 50 people in attendance more information on their risk factors," Hutton said. The event, which was sponsored by Pfizer, provided each participant with a wellness passport, developed by the drug company. "It is our hope that each person will review their personal risk factors which can be docu- mented in their passport," she said. "[They can] make a decision to make one change to- wards a healthier lifestyle." Healthy snacks were provided by the Lion- ess group of Goderich for the event. Future events will be held in the new year according to Hutton.
