First ever Huron Toy Ride roars across county for Children's Aid Dave Sykes signal -star publisher With the deafening roar of nearly 75 motorcycles, caring bikers from across mid -Western Ontario rode off on an idyl- lic fall colour tour in the Huron County countryside Sunday in aid of needy chil- dren in their communities. The first Huron Toy Ride for the Chil- dren's Aid Society Christmas Bureau was an unqualified success as motor- cycle enthusiasts from across the county and around the area dropped off a new, unwrapped toy to support the Christmas program that provides gifts for needy families and children in the county. As ride organizer Donald Broadfoot watched generous bikers fill up the box on his pickup truck at the registration desk, he took a moment to speak of the caring natureof the fraternity of bikers. "This just shows that bikers care," he said. "I was hoping for maybe 50 riders but I contacted the groups and they pro- vided the support today. One ride was cancelled recently and there is a need and it gave us an opportunity to step up. The charity does good work and the help we give stays at home." Members of the Canadian Motor Cruisers (CMC) and Association of Bikers for Awareness Training and Edu- cation (ABATE), with chapters across southwestern Ontario, were out in force to help organize and participate in the event that left the Canadian Tire parking lot at 1 p.m., all sporting purple wrist bands in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month (October). For organizers of the annual Christ- mas Bureau, and its chair, Barb Hogan, Sunday's event was a perfect kickoff to their annual campaign. "Don approached us to support the Bu- reau with the ride and this is definitely a good start to the campaign," she said. "We are so grateful to all the motorcy- clists. There is such a good turnout. This a great kickoff." The bikers left Goderich at 1 p.m. and headed towards Bayfield via Orchard Line before returning to town on a cir- cuitous route that would take the motor- cyclists on a ringer of The Square before returning to the Crabby Joe's and A&W parking lot. The event was sponsored by Canadian Tire, Crabby Joe's, A&W and Platinum Power Sports. extensiue Selection! your Free Bra#Ffttfng Den? mar'N.PA Glveawa celebrating Oh OPen Monday - F 9arn - 5:30pm, Saturday 9am - 5pm LAMES r & L RI 162 The Square, GODERICH 519.524.7232
