Name change a sign fo worse to come
To the Editor:
Recently I received a letter
telling me that Bluew$ter 1'V
cable was changing its name
and its billing practices. This
new policy was going to be
good for me because it would
"provide us [the cable company]
with the ability to reduce costs."
It appears to me that it will in
fact cost me money by making
sure that if I ever leave their sys-
tem, I would have already paid

Graduation a rite of
passage for local youth
This week's edition of the Signal -Star features the annual commencement
special section, highlighting the graduates of Goderich and District Collegiate
Institute and St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School.
For all the students, the commencement ceremony marks a significant mile-
stone in their academic careers, a rite of passage to the next stage of leaming in
their young adult lives.
For parents and family supporters, graduation means that their children have
not only moved from their home and hometown, but have moved to a new stage
in their young lives that speaks of independence, growth and the next phase of
the maturation process.
Graduation represents a time of new beginnings, growth and possibilities.
As the students excitedly reconnected in the hallways before the start of the
formal part of the commencement ceremonies, they were overtly exuberant and
genuinely pleased to reconnect with old friends, teachers and classmates.
They have new lives, in new communities and their studies have taken new
directions and meaning.
There is now a more defined and distinctive purpose to their lives and learn-
ing•.
Yet, they exhibited 'that unbridled enthusiasm to be back at their old school,
familiar territory where they felt safe and secure and to excitedly share the tales
of their new experiences with old friends. It's that fragile time and territory that
sandwiches young people between adolesence and adulthood.
They recognize they are on the verge of being on their own, making their own
decisions, making their own lives and way in the world.
Yet, commencement provides that friendly reconnect to their old world. To all
that is familiar and comfortable.
What lies ahead can be both a source of exhilaration and exasperation.
What is encouraging about the ceremony is the continued community interest
and support in our young people and their academic pursuits. Countless awards,
bursaries and scholarships are made available to deserving young people who
have distinguished themselves in their studies at their respective schools.
It speaks to the tnie definition of community that individuals, groups, clubs,
businesses and educators recognize the achievements of our young people and
generously extend a helping hand along the way. The support is evident and no
doubt, appreciated.
The community loses a valuable resource when its young citizens leave the
area to continue their post -secondary education and adult lives.
Most will not return and they will make new lives in new communities and
contribute in the way they learned about community in Goderich and area.
We wish them well knowing they will be a credit to their families and com-
munities. (D.S.)

so would be paying for services
that I did not receive. Also, noth-
ing was said about any reduction
in rates.
Further, I was part of a survey
that asked as part of its ques-
tions, what I thought about the
company changing its name. I
was clear that a name change
would be a negative for me, re-
minding me of Volvo telling us
that nothing was changing but
its name. We all know what hap-
pened there!
This "good news" comes on
the eve of the Christmas season
when half of Volvo employees
are still without placement. But
they will get a whole 30 days to
come up with an extra month's
fees. What a generous gesture!
