Residents of Martha Street are in a sink or
swim situation with drainage problems re-
sulting from developments along Mary Street
to the east.
Gary Dawson of Martha Street went be-
fore council Oct. 13 to air his concerns and
seek whatever help was available through the
town.
"All the water that was laying on their prop-
erties is now on mine," he said. "I've talked a
lot of times with (the building inspector). No-
bod,y will d anything.""
After Dawson's presentation, clerk -admin-
istrator Larry McCabe pointed out to council
they have no legal obligations in the matter.
The site plan for the developments in ques-
tion would have all had to pass a lot drainage
plan.
What the town could do, however, is look
into the cost of fixing the problem.
"The town has no legal obligation," he said
"However, council could request an engineer
to prepare a cost estimate for that."
Council pondered two options - letting both
parties settle theif own affairs in civil court, or
to get involved with tate matter.
Dawson said the only instruction he has
received so far is to pump excess water onto

the road. Coun. Heather Lyons said since the
town drains are taking it in, the town should
take a closer look.
"The only place this water can go is the
town's water -system drains," she said. "What
would the recourse be if the engineers found
corrective measures T'
Lyons led a successful motion to have the
town engineers create a cost report for the
drainage.

award October 13. Goderich also took
tion at the Oct. 13 meeting of Goderich Town
Council, as Communities in Bloom Goderich
chair Shelley Peet, presented the international
award to council.
"It's my extreme pleasure," she said.
"I'm humbled and honoured to present this
award. '
Godeiich prevailed in the competition, she
said, and looked "outstanding."
Peet credited the continued support of town
administration, council, churches and service
clubs for the first place finish. The extra help
went a long way in the final judgement.
"The judges said we did everything just a
little bit better than the other communities,"
she said.
The Heritage Committee also got a nod
for winning the heritage award. The award is
country -wide and not limited to community
size.
"We won that hands down," Peet said.
CABS
Taxi fare in Goderich is going up.
The news was finalized at the October 13
meeting of Goderich Town Council.

cal cab companies are able to calibrate their
metres - something that has to be done by a
London-based business.
"We looked at the fees requested and came
to an agreement," said Goderich clerk -admin-
istrator, Larry McCabe. "And came up with a
bylaw agreeable to the cab companies."
This is the first increase in taxi rates in sev-
en years, and it works out to approximately
10-11 per cent.
Starting rates will remain the same at $3.20,
however, customers can expect an increase
from $1.80 to $2 per kilometre.
Out-of-town trips would also come with a
wait fee of $30 if the cab is required to stay
put while the customer is at an appointment.
