PC Leader blasts harmonized tax
Dave Sykes

Life will simply become more ex-
pensive in the province of Ontario
for business, farms and families with
the introduction of the Harmonized
Sales Tax (HST), Tim Hudak, leader
of the Ontario Progressive Conserva-
tive party told a joint meeting of the
Chamber of Commerce and Rotary
Club here Tuesday, Oct. 13.
When the HST comes into ef-
fect July 1, 2010, it will combine, or
harmonize, the-five-pereent1ederal
goods and services tax (GST) with
the eight percent Ontario sales tax for
a combined tax of 13 per cent.
And Hudak is concerned that many
items previously exempt from provin-
cial sales tax, such as sports registra-
tion costs, clothing and utilities will
simply make life more expensive for
all Ontarians.
"We are opposing this new tax in-
crease and it will simply make life
more expensive with increases in gas,
rent and heat," he said. "It will hit
farmers and businesses with exemp-
tions. It will take $2.5 billion out of
the wallets of Ontarians and how will
that help? It will kill jobs"
Calling the HST a "greedy tax
grab", Hudak said the effect will be
felt most by the middle class and re-
tirees, claiming that with the continu-
ing recession and loss of manufactur-
ing jobs, the HST presents the final
nail in the economic coffin.
"The economy faces great chal-
lenges and Ontario's best days are yet
to come but that success is not guar -

anteed," he said. "We have to make
the right decisions and get back on
track. We can restore Ontario to its
rightful place as the economic engine
of the country."
The introduction of the HST is
supported by the Ontario Chamber
of Commerce and some business and
manufacturing groups which claim
that a harmonized tax structure will
benefit business and generate more
economic growth in the long term.
But families and small
businesses will have to work
harder just to stand still and
tread water, Hudak said, add-
ing that job losses at Volvo
Construction Equipment in
Goderich and Campbell's
Soup in Listowel have con-
tributed to the 300,000 jobs
lost in the manufacturing sec-
tor in the past six years.
The conservative party
would offer a one-year pay-
roll tax holiday and a one-year
freeze on the land transfer tax

to spur needed construction and new
welfare incentives are required to get
people back into the workforce.
"The government has the respon-
sibility to create a climate to succeed
and then get out of the way," Hudak
said of his party's philosophy. "The
government also has to live within its
means and I'm concerned about the
deepening culture of entitlement that
is creeping into government."
That same day in the Legislature,
the Conservatives asked for a full in-
dependent inquiry into the eHealth
scandal, citing potential criminal be-
haviour in the awarding of contracts
and hiring of consultants.
Hudak believes that Ontarians need
to understand the effects of the HST
and get on-line to fight the tax grab
during tough economic times. He
urged taxpayers to sign an online pe-
tition at www.daltonsalestax.com.
Hudak was on a speaking tour in
area ridings and visited Clinton later
in the day Tuesday and addressed
sports group in London, Wednesday.
