Diabetes and cardiovascular disease big problems in Huron
How do you measure up with your
health?
It's a question every person needs to ask
themselves, and the Health Matters group
is hoping to provide some answers Octo-
ber 14 at North Street United.
Diabetes and cardiovascular disease are
two of the most common medical problems
in Huron County, and registered nurse and
Healthy Hearts director Ellie Brewster said
the interactive event will help put people
in touch with their bodies and alert them
to risk factors.
"We want to increase awareness about
the risk factors," she said. "As well as how
to prevent cardiovascular disease arid dia-
betes."
Dr. J. Ennett, a general practicioner at
the Alexandra, Marine and General Hos-
pital's diabetes clinic, will lead the discus-
sion, and there will be opportunities for
some hands-on participation.
"It's very proactive," Brewster said. "We
are working on preventative medicine."
Participants can take advantage of blood
sugar and blood pressure screening at the
session, as well as have a body composi-
tion analysis to give them an idea of how
they stack up. However, the screening sta-
tions are not to be considered medical ad-
vice, only a guideline, Brewster said.
"This is not diagnostic," she said. "It is
.lust to indicate your risk factors and pro-
vide information about what you would
need to do if the factors were positive."
Each visitor to the event will be given a
health passport, which they can fill out to
determine their own risk factors and offer
ways to stave off disease, including how to
eat healthy over the holidays.
Brewster said the entire health commu-
nity is tuned in to the event.
The evening is part of a series of Health
Matters talks, and involves health workers
from pharmaceutical companies, the hos-
pital, local service clubs, parish nurses and
the YMCA.
"I'm Healthy, How do I Measure Up?"
runs from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, October
14 at North Street United. For more infor-

Water quality in ACW in decline, especially after storms
Mike McElhone, a cottage -resident
of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, ad-
dressed ACW council on October 6,
2009, and his message was clear; local
river gwater isn't safe.
Citing several results in which local
rivers tested over the safe amount of
e.coli, he indicated that water quality
is continuously dropping, especially af-
ter heavy rains, and that crude testing
methods are. ineffective; they need new
ways of telling if the water is safe.
"The method that the Health Unit
suggests; don't swim in water if you
can't see your feet in three feet of wa-
ter, isn't accurate. I found that if people
went swimming in clear water and con-
sidered it safe, they would be wrong 23
per cent of the time, and if they didn't
go swimming due to murky water, they
would be wrong 45 per cent of the
time."
McElhone suggests that, for the safe-
ty of the lakefront community, a system
be adopted that some towns use on the
state -side of the Great Lakes.
These system tests the water and pro-
vides results nearly immediately. How-
ever, costing $20,000 per location for
equipment, it could be a costly expen-
diture.
"I'm not suggesting we put one of
these systems at every beach, but may-
be one at Bayfield and one at Goder-
ich," he said. "If their tests are bad, that
can be an indicator for other beaches."
Other results McElhone presented
showed that rain -water severely agi-
tates E.coli levels, making them raise
up to 47 times what they are normally.
