"It brought competitors from all over the world, and it was just incred- ibly organized." The fourth place win net- ted Koopmans $175, which more than covered his $125 entry fee. His prize came from a $147,000 purse. Koopmans is looking for more participants to enjoy horseshoes in the coming year, as he needs all the chal- lengers he can get to practice for next year's world cham- pionship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is also looking for- ward to the Canadian Cham- pionships in Vancouver. Koopmans swears by horseshoes, saying it brings out the best in people; "It's a great sport to play; you get excercise, but its not too strenuous, and everyone is very gentlemanly, very sportsmanlike." Ralph Koopmans brought home a fourth place win from the World Champion- ship of Iorsehoes. Koopman played 15 games over the three-day tourna- ment, and, despite beating the first, second, and third placed competitors, he was a point short of medalling. Held at the Convention Center in .Springfield, the event brought competitors from all over the world in different rankings. Rankings are determined by the num- ber of horseshoes a thrower can 'ring' around the pole in five attempts. Koopmans plays in the 20 per cent ringer percentage, meaning he averages one ringer every five throws. The two-week event brought 1,330 participants to Springfield early in August.
