The Goderich Jr. 'C' Sail-
ors played two competitive
games this past weekend but
came out on the losing end of
both matches, dropping a 3-1
decision to Kincardine Friday
and losing 3-2 to Wingham at
the Maitland Recreation Cen-
tre Saturday.
On Friday, the Sailors trav-
eled to Kincardine and despite
out shooting the Bulldogs
35-27 in the game, Goderich
came out on the losing end of
a 3-1 score.
The home team 'Bulldogs
scored a powerplay goal in
the opening period by Mike
Smailes and added two goals
in the second period by Derek
Regier and Ben Larsen to
cany a three -goal lead into
the final period, despite being
outshot 26-20 by the Sailors.
The Sailors Ben
Gowing narrowed the
deficit to two goals,
converting a pass from
Scott Miller and Ja-
mie Miller just five
minutes into the final
period, but that was
as close as Goderich
would get.
Brian . Hainsworth
turned aside 34 of the
35 Sailors' shots and
Shawn Gethke faced
27 shots in the Goder-
ich net.
Goderich was as-
sessed 30 minutes in
penalties on seven
infractions while Kin-
cardine racked' up 26
minutes in the penalty
box on nine infrac-
tions.
It was an entirely different
game at home Saturday as the
Sailors jumped out to 2-0 lead
after the first period and then
watched Wmgham march
back with two second period
goals to tie the game 2-2 and
score the winner in the open-
ing minute of the final period
ona powerplay effort.
Scott Miller, with an un-
assisted effort just five min-
utes into the game and Ja-
mie Miller with a goal from
Brendan Thomson and Brett
McGuiness late in the first
period, staked Goderich to an
early two -goal lead.
The Ironmen got right back
in the game with a goal in the
opening minute of the second
period by Brandon Chafe
and then Greg Tiffin con-
verted a pass from Chaffe late
in the period to tie the game
2-2.
With Dean Reynolds off
for interference in the open-
ing minute of the final period,
Wmgham scored what proved
to be the winning goal with
Chaffe scoring his second
goal of the game.
Wingham outshot Goder-
ich 28-25 as Jason Hamilton
picked up the win in net and
Derrick Mitchell played in
goal for Goderich. Wingham
was assessed 10 minutes in
penalties and Goderich was
caught for six minor infrac-
tions.
The Sailors return to ac-
tion this weekend in Mitchell
where they take on the Hawks
at 7:15 p.m.
