In-home heroes recognized
Heroes were recognized at the 2nd annual
Heroes in the Home Caregiver Recognition
Award ceremony last Thursday, Oct. 8 at the
Mitchell Golf & Country Club, and there were
no red capes anywhere to be seen.
The event, which saw more than 70 care-
givers from across Perth and Huron Counties
honoured through the South West Community
Care Access Centre (CCAC), was a way to pay
tribute in a formal way of every day citizens
who just do what they do.
"This event is about recognizing every day
heroes who make a real difference in our com-
munities," said Sandra Coleman,. CEO of the
South West CCAC.
Coleman said in her brief address that people
think of heroes in the Superman sense from the
popular Superman movies, starring Christopher
Reeve. In 1995, Reeve was injured horseback
riding and was paralyzed when, by some ac-
counts, he became a real hero as he continued
to work as a performer and became a powerful
advocate for spinal cord injury research.
Reeves was asked what is a hero, and he said
his answer changed from being someone who
commits a courageous act without considering
the consequences, to an ordinary individual
who finds strength to persevere and endure de-
spite overwhelming obstacles.
Coleman said that quote is fitting, for the he-
roes being celebrated "don't have super human
powers like Sjbperman the character, but like
Christopher Reeve the person. You are ordinary
people who choose to do extraordinary things.
"Our Heroes in the Home often face over-
whelming obstacles, yet you keep going," she
continued. "You find strength you didn't know
was there. You help and support others, never
counting the cost. You go above and beyond,
day in and day out." •
Coleman suggested that red capes be handed
out rather than certificates "so you'd stand out
in the community....but none of you would
likely wear them"
"Your heroism often goes unnoticed which
is why today is our opportunity to recognize
the unsung heroes," she added. "To hear your
stories, to celebrate your achievements, to be
inspired by your spirit.
"You remind us that true heroism lives in the
heart."
Various professionals, family members,
friends and vol teens whose kindness and
commitment have abled many people to live
full lives in their comTnunity were recognized,
despite the challenges of age, illness and dis-
ability.
