Huron -Bruce brings
home patriotic silver
Gerard Cracow _
signal -star staff
Huron -Bruce is showing their
true colours.
The riding recently received
the distinction of being the
second most patriotic in all of
Canada, thanks to a campaign
started by Huron -Bruce MP,
Conservative Ben Lobb.
The nod comes after a pre -
Canada Day blitz, in which
people across' the riding were
asked to display as many Ca-
nadian flags as possible for the
holiday.
The "Proud to be Canadian"
Campaign results were an-
nounced last Friday, and Lobb
and Huron -Bruce were second
only to Guy Lauzon, the Con-
servative caucus chair.
"From what I understand it
was a very close second," Lobb
said. "It was a great result for
Huron -Bruce."
Prior to the contest, the MP's
office issued post -card -sized
flags that included a mail -in
portion for verification.
Lobb said more than 3,300
households sent in their cards,
and many more called in for
flags.
Anyone who sent in ques-
tions were answered, as were
those who requested full-sized
flags, he said.
The cards also provided
constituents an opportunity to
share their personal stories of
why they thought Canada was
a great place to be, abkexpress
their support for Canada's
troops, past and present.
"There were stories from
parents and families of veter-
ans," Lobb said. "The people of
Huron -Bruce are hard -workers
and they are proud of our troops
and our veterans."
The first-time MP said there

are a number of reasons why
the riding is so patriotic - the
biggest being their willingness
to get involved.
"We have a very active and
informed constituent. People
are well-informed and proud of
where they come from," Lobb
said. "I think Huron -Bruce is a
definitely a unique demograph-
ic. Many have retired here,
and many grew up on farms,
and have a great work ethic to
them."
While the world sunk into
recession, Lobb said Canadians
took time to reflect on "what
they have to be thankful for."
Lobb also expressed his
thanks to local newspaper and
radio outlets for spreading the
word about the Proud to be
Canadian campaign, adding it
would all be for naught if peo-
ple didn't have pride in their
work and their home:
"In a great country like Can-
ada, people are proud of their
achievements," said Lobb.
"And where they live."

Coun. Dorothy Kelly (Morris
Turnberry) notes there have been
a few good deeds accomplished
in the county this past year.
• Kelly, speaking as chairwom-
an of the Huron County Acces-
sibility Advisory Committee,
reports Colborne Public School
is now home to a fully acces-
sible playground thanks to the
dedicated efforts of the school
community and its supporters.
The project also drew financial
support from the Ontario Tril-
lium. Fund, Ronald McDonald
House, Hydro One, Wal-Mart,
Goderich Rona and the Goder-
ich Kinsmen and Lions' Clubs.
She adds the committee is
also praising Huron -Bruce MPP
Carol Mitchell for following
through on a pledge to make her
Clinton constituency office fully
accessible.
