The Shoppers Drug Mart Tree of Life campaign in support of the
Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation's Keeping
Abreast Campaign, kicked off the three-year fundraising effort
by selling over 800 leaves and apples to raise money for the
latest in breast cancer screening technology. Theresa Thomas,
front store manger, and cosmetic manager, Wanda Hodges,
display a handful of the leaves that helped fill out the store's Tree
of Life. The store was second in the entire southwestern region
in the fundraising effort with over $1,100 raised.

The Alexandra Marine and General Hospi-
tal Foundation's new `Keeping Abreast' digital
mammography project and Shoppers Drug
Mart, have partnered in an effort to raise funds
to help improve the quality of life for women
and their families in Goderich area, through
the Tree of Life Campaign.
Now in its eighth year, the four-week fund-
raising campaign, running from Sept. 26
through Oct. 16 will harvest much needed
funds in support of the foundation's digital
mammography unit.
"The success of the "Keeping Abreast" digi-
tal mammography project will come from the
generosity of donors within the communities
that the hospital serves," said the Foundation.
"We want to encourage the community to step
up and support the `Keeping Abreast' digital
mammography project through the Shoppers
Drug Mart Tree of Life Fundraising Cam-
paign."
People can participate by visiting the Shop-
pers Drug Mart and purchase a `leaf' for a loo-

nie, a `maple leaf' for $5 or an `apple' for $50.
Each time a donor contributes, they can per-
sonalize a `leaf' that will be placed on a branch
of the Tree of Life which will be prominently
displayed in the store.
"This campaign really demonstrates the dif-
ference we can make when partnering together
for a common goal and we thank Shoppers
Drug Mart, their employees and their custom-
ers for helping us improve the lives of women
and their families in Huron County," said the
Foundation.
"The Shoppers Drug Mart Tree of Life
Campaign is a four-week program held across
Canada each autumn. Customers, staff and
Pharmmtcist-owners at over 1,500 Shoppers
Druir N lart stores raise funds for local wom-
en's health initiatives through the purchase of
the Tree of Life icons. Since 2002, the Tree of
Life Campaign has raised $11 million for Ca-
nadian health charities. This year alone, over
300 women's health charities across Canada
will benefit from the proceeds.
School closures will soon affect
everyone in Huron County: Seili

munity Hospital, lost its high
school in Seaforth, as well as
elementary schools in Walton
and Vanastra.
'This is only round two
(of the ARC)," says Seili. "It
will affect everyone of you in
round three."
Larry Adams, the county's
Chief Administrative Offi-
cer, reports a group dubbed
the Community School Al-
liance is currently gathering
its resources in an attempt to
stave off school closures. That
group, says Adams, could use
the county's support in its
plans to take its concerns to
the political realm.
"There is a groundswell
from across the province,"
says Adams, noting the Alli-
ance's resolution is to be ad-
dressed at the county's Oct
16 committee -of -the -whole
session.
Coun. George Robertson
(South Huron) notes his mu-
nicipality is also facing an
ARC for the second consecu-
tive time, this time with five
schools under review when
only one, Usborne Central,
was under the microscope last
year.
"We were told, straight out,
that they are going to close a
school. Period," he says.
Coun. Neil Vincent (North
Huron) also saw his munici-
pality undergo an ARC last
year, with the result being
three schools - Blyth, Fast
Wawanosh and Wmgham -
are to close in favour of one
larger regional site.
The biggest problem, says
Vincent, is it seems the board's
agenda is already set and that
"they change the parameters"
as the process moves along.
Seili says another note of
concern is -26 per cent of the
property tax base is funnelled
towards education, which is
a figure that will remain the
same regardless of whether a
municipality continues to have
schools within its borders.
"I think 4.'s time to take a
stand," he says. "If we're go-
ing to be leaders it's time we
say no not only to our MPP,
but also to the Minister of
Education."
While Councillors Bill
Dowson and Dave Johnston
(Bluewater) noted an ARC is
also under way on their home
turf, Johnston said it seems
the board of education doesn't
consider the impact of school
closures on communities.
• "If we start losing our
schools, our hospitals, our
communities are going
down," he says, urging fellow
councillors to form a unified
front on the issue.
As per the suggestion of
Warden Ken Oke, council
agreed to forego passing a
resolution on the matter until
it hears the Alliance's propos-
al at its Oct. 16 session.
