Warden pays tribute to REACH
Beath County's decision to present the
OPP with a plaque of thanks for its
work.
"We were the only county that
recognized the OPP for their dedi-
cation," he says.
Oke also made note of Varna resi-
dent Melissa Sparling's recent win
as the All Ontario Queen of the Fur-
row and notes an open house will be
held Oct. 25 at the Stanley Complex
in Varna, to congratulate Sparling
and county youths Brandon and Ja-
cob McGavin on their stellar show-
ings at the International Plowing
Match held in Temiskaming.
GIVING THANKS
More than a dozen county em-
ployees were thanked for many
years of service in a special presen-
tation at council chambers.
Among those being honoured
were Dianne Cook, Debbie Cuthill,
Bonnie Finch, and Cathy Mcllwain,
all with 35 years of service in the
signal -star publishing
September was a busy month.
That was the sentiment expressed
by County Warden Ken Oke (South
Huron) Oct. 7, during his monthly
address to county council.
Oke took time out to pay tribute
to the grand -opening gala hosted by
the Regional Equine & Agriculture
Centre of Huron (REACH) in Clin-
ton.
"It probably was the best party
that Huron County ever had," he
said, noting he was somewhat disap-
pointed that the county's $500,000
contribution to the project didn't re-
ceive a mention.
Other highlights for September
included participating in the On-
tario Provincial Police's 100th an-
niversary bash where Oke was the
only mayor to join dignitaries on
the stage. He thinks the special in-
vitation came on the heels of Huron
Homes department
"You are the backbone of the
county," says Oke. "We have a
county that we can be proud of, and
one of th reasons is the employees
that provide a service."
LET THE TRAINING BEGIN
County Chief Administrative Of-
ficer Larry Adams reports all coun-
ty administrators, staff, councillors,
and board members will require
training as part of the Ontarians
With Disabilities Act legislation that
is being rolled out by the province.
TURN TO THE PAGE
Tim Waechter, a Grade 7 student
at Brussels Public School, was wel-
comed into council's fold as the page
for September.
Tim, who is the grandson of County
Councillor Joseph Seili (Huron East)
and great-grandson of County Coun.
Max Demaray (Howick Township)
enjoys hockey and soccer.
ACW resident requests erosion aid
signal -star staff
Tom On, a part-time resident of
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, is
concerned with erosion around the
Nine Mile River, and visited council
on Oct. 3 to discuss the problem.
According to Orr, the problem has
plagued the area around the river for
40 years.
"Our problem goes back many
years," he said. "In 1979, Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority did
some studies on Nine Mile River ero-
sion problems, but there were no per-
manent solutions."
Orr and his neighbours have been
working on this project for some
time.
"We've been trying to solve this
problem for 30 years, and in the late
70s and early 80s, we did find a way
to help it," Orr said "We created berms
in the lake to provide steady flow, but
it was a temporary solution, and cost
money."
The problem was compounded, ac-
cording to Or, when a new bridge was
installed over the Nine Mile River near
Port Albert.
"[The bridge] cause the river to go
South instead of North," Orr said.
Orr said that to find a solution, they
first need- to do a study, and was re-
questing assistance from ACW coun-
cil. The tests necessary will cost ap-
proximately $15,000.
Orr suggested that; if council

helped with the study, they could have
the project prepared should financial
assistance become available for such
an endeavor.
ACW Council pledged $5000 to
the cause, and also suggested which
groups they could approach to help
them reach their $15,000 goal.
VAN DIEPENBEEK BY-LAW
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh was
faced with a by-law to temporarily
postpone the posting of security on un-
developed land owned by Reeve Ben
Van Diepenbeek.
The request was a continuance from
a previous meeting, and the by-law
was brought forward on October 6,
2009.
This will see the development agree-
ment between Reeve Ben Van Diepen-
beek and the township amended to
have the current security postponed
until he can develop the lots.
The Reeve has agreed that the secu-
rity must be posted prior to the devel-
opment of the land.
Council deferred the by-law until
more information about similar situa-
tions can be investigated.
In The Signal -Star for September
30; in the article entitled Reeve asks
council for release of security deposit,
should have read that security pay-
ments would be postponed, not re-
turned.
GREENHILLS CEMETERY OPTIONS
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
Township Council received an in -cam-
era report on Greenhills Cemetery in
Lucknow, which was recently placed
on the real estate market.
Council has decided not to commit
themselves to any actions at this time.
In the Signal -Star, on September
30, the headline regarding this issue;
"Township considering cemetery pur-
chase," may have been misleading, as
council was considering the cemetery's
future, not necessarily considering pur-
chasing it.
