need of repairs
To the editor;
Would someone, please, come out and
fix about eight feet of sidewalk in front of
166 Hincks Street.
It makes me feel sad to see a wheelchair
come and look at the eight feet of gravel
and turn around and go back to the cor-
ner, drive on to the street to go around the
gravel. It has been this way for about two
months.
It should either be fixed or a sign should
be put up advising people to "Use at Your
Own Risk.'
Sincerely,
Art Bell

bours, in which they expressed their appreciation
for my efforts in helping to make our neighbour-
hood look attractive.
I feel honoured that they would think that much
of my time planting -and maintaining the triangular
plot across the street to make such a nice gesture.
It's nice to have the recognition. Thanks to Peter
and the rest of you!
It will soon be time to tear out all those pretty
plants, and start planning for next year! If you
think you would like to join our Communities in
Bloom group, you are welcome to come out to our
next meeting on Tuesday, Oct 20th at 7 p.m. at the
tourist Centre.

You know your pilot is into the sauce when...
Several months ago an ugly airline incident
occurred at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport
that had 300 passengers on a Boeing 767
screaming for their lives. And their plane was
still on the ground.
The crew was preparing for take -off when
pilot Alexander Cheplevsky came on the P.A.
system and said "Welcome Aboard" in
Russian. Nobody on the Moscow to New
York flight could understand him. Then he
switched to English which was unintelligible
even to the Americans on board. Then he
. continued to slur his way through a stream of
consciousness diatribe that was likely a mys-
tery even to him. The pilot of the plane was
obviously drunk.
As passengers began to grumble and com-
plain about the pilot's incoherence they were
told to shut up and to quit "makir. , rouble."
Some were threatened with expuls, from
the plane, on the spot. (I know what you're
thinking — the KGB has infiltrated Air
Canada's flight. attendant training program.
Wait. It gets better.)
One passenger used his cell phone to call
the Aeroflot office in the airport where he was
told it was "impossible to have a drunk pilot!"
They hung up on him.
Finally Aeroflot ground officials boarded
the plane to calm things down and their pitch
to the passengers was: "It's not such a big
eat
practically flies itself." Man, there's
a confidence builder, eh?
You know how passengers some-
times clap and cheer upon landing?
Well, the passengers on Aeroflot
Flight #315 were booing before take-
off.
As the yelling of the rebellious
passengers got louder and more des-
perate, Aeroflot officials asked the
pilot to come out of the cockpit to prove he
was not drunk.. He refused to leave the cock-
pit.
Finally, after much pleading and some
threatening the pilot wobbled out of the cock-
pit, unsteady on his feet with bloodshot eyes.
When passengers demanded he be thrown off
the plane, the pilot offered to make a deal.
"I'll sit quietly in the comer," he said. "We
have three more pilots. I won't even touch
the controls. I promise."
I'm sure that as he slurred his words, pas-
sengers were not too sure about the "I'll sit in
the comer" bit.
As passengers demanded to be let off the
plane, Ms Ksenia Sobchak, Russia's best
known TV host stepped forward and demand-
ed all four pilots be replaced. Aeroflot offi-
cials backed down and a new crew boarded
the aircraft before the Russian farce ended
like a Greek tragedy. The flight left three

if the pilot is drunk because this aircraft hours late . with . pilots who were clearly
sober.
Later a spokeswoman for the air-
line said_ the pilot's blood test
showed no traces of alcohol. - She
blamed the incident on the "mass
psychosis" among disgruntled pas-
sengers.
Aeroflot, famous for rude flight
attendants, lousy service and inedi-
ble food are now known for employ-
ing pilots who got their wings at the Boris
Yeltsin Flying School. Other pilots, one from
British Airways, have been found to be drink-
ing on the job. You can't be too careful when
you life is in their hands.
Here then are sure-fire signs ° your pilot
could be plastered:
• Even before take -off he invites all pas-
sengers to sing along to "Ninety-nine Bottles
of Beer On The Wall."
• He boards the plane wearing an engi-
neer's hat and whenever he makes an
announcement you hear a train whistle in the
cockpit. '
`• You notice his shirt tail is sticking out his
zipper as he dances down the aisle with his
flotation device.
• He's first in line when the flight atten-
dants bring out the Duty Free cart.
• Halfway through the flight he begins
screaming "Hijack! Hijack" and gets hys-
terical when he..adds "Hijane! Hijane!"
• Over the North Atlantic he tips the plane
slightly so you can see the Grand Canyon on
your right.
• He asks that passenger Johnny Walker
identify himself to the flight crew and another
bottle of Scotch is smuggled into the cock-
pit.
• After announcing that the in-flight movie
system is not working, he offers to fly low
over drive-in theatres for the rest of the trip.
• Suddenly he stomps out of the cockpit to
demand the guy in the front row remove his
shoes and then begins tickling his feet.
• He announces that he's getting low on
fuel and orders all the little bottles of Smirnoff
Vodka be passed forward.
• He invites female passengers to come to
the cockpit where he's accepting air miles for
membership in the Mile High Club.
• His speech is slightly garbled when he
instructs passengers not to smoke in the
washrooms and store crying babies in the
overhead compartments.
• You hear hien on the radio sending out an
emergency Mayday distress call for cocktail
wieners.
• You notice he's wearing a captain's hat,
shorts, a Hawaiian shirt and humming the
theme song from Gilligan's Island.
• And finally, you know your pilot is gib -
bled to the gills when he keeps deliberately
flying into turbulence in orderA tato staayawake.
