Sod turning for the project took place July 14 and immediately construction began on the diagnostic imaging centre that will house the CT Scanner and diagnostic imaging de- partment at the_ hospital. Over the past 30 months, members of the AMGH Hospital Foundation Board and an army of volunteers_ raised over $5 million to finance the purchase of the scanner and required renovations to the hospital's imag- ing department. Melloul=Blamey Construc- tion Inc. is proceeding with the constrjiction of the required renovations to the hospital's Diagnostic Imaging Department to house the CT Scanner and new fluoroscopy and gen- eral X-ray equipment. To date, the demolition of the existing medical imaging is nearly complete and the slab on grade was to have been poured this week. Masonry work on the exterior walls is ex- • pected to begin within the next few weeks of construction and asbestos abatement from the existing imaging department has been completed. Electrical, mechanical, plumbing and med- ical gas work is underway inside the building and it is expected that structural steel will be put in the next few weeks with roofing work to follow. The construction project is expected to be completed by the end of the year and hospital officials indicate that the CT Scanner should be in place by the first few weeks of January 2010. Seili leads charge against school closures Cheryl Heath sun media The bleeding of rural communities must stop. That was the message- delivered by Councillor Jo- seph Seili (Huron East) Oct. 7, during Huron Coun- ty's council session. Seili says it is time Huron County lead the way in a charge against rural school closures given the Avon Maitland District School Board is once again in the midst of forming an Aceomniodation Review Com- mittee (ARC) entrusted with the task of reviewing the operations of six schools in the northeast portion of the county .and five schools in its southern portion. Two of those schools, Brussels and Grey Central public, fall within Huron East's borders and if they were to close, notes Seili, students would have to travel outside of municipality's boundaries for their edu- cation. `Boards are only interested in accom- modation spaces," says Seili, noting the Brussels school is at 99 per cent capacity. "I think it's .unfair. It's unjust." In asking councillors to . form a mo- tion compelling Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell and Education Minf ter Kathleen Wynne to address the situation, Seili says the Province has been less than forthcom- ing with its rural constituents. Seili notes Premier Dalton McGuinty campaigned on the platform of no school closures, but the practice is continuing in rural areas. Further, says Seili, rural communities need educa- tion and healthcare to draw residents, development and growth. As it stands, Huron East has seen its emergency department hours curtailed at Seaforth See SCHOOL, Page 9 WE DO IT ALL!
