An apple a day...
A -familiarfalltradition,
the 4th Goderich Beavers and Cubs were out on the streets
Saturday, October 10, selling apples as part of their annual Apple Day. Above, five-year-
old Aaron Matthews gives his best sales pitch - a big, Beaver smile.

Volvo worker
transitioning
hits milestone
Dave Sykes
signal -star publisher
A working career at Volvo had been a way of
life for many generations in Goderich but that
way of life took a direct hit one year ago when
the parent company announced the closure of
the grader manufacturing facility here.
It was just over a year ago, that Volvo Con-
struction Equipment (Volvo CE) announced
that its grader manufacturing activities would
move to company facilities in Shippensburg,
Pennsylvania and Brazil this year.
The announcement sent shockwaves through
the' community that boasted a 100 -year tradi-
tion of the production of road -making equip-
ment. The closure would affect more than 500
unionized and non-union employees in total
and the company announced that jobs would
be cut in phases over a 15 -month period, con-
cluding in December 2010.
One year later, more than 50 per cent of the
affected employees have successfully transi-
tioned to new careers, job opportunities or new
phases in their lives.
For facility General Manager, Alan Ball, the
transition figure represents a significant mile-
stone for affected employees and reinforces the
positive effect the company's employee action
centre has had in helping people find new ca-
reers and retraining opportunities.
"I think that 51 per cent of the employees
transitioning is a significant milestone," Ball
said. "Many have found new work, some have
chosen to retire and many others have com-
pleted retraining programs and are placed else-
where. There continues to be support services
available to employees and local employers
can co-ordinate through us if they are looking
for people."
The action centre continues to offer support
