I would also like to express my gratitude for the many good wishes, cards and gifts since my retirement from the O.P.P. in May. Bernice Glenn called to say that daughter Amy and David Anderson of Elmvale have had a baby boy. Trent Douglas weighted in at 8 lbs.15 oz. He was born on Sept. 9. Yes, that's 09 - 09 - 09! The first time parents are no doubt over the moon and Bernice, was thrilled to spent a week visiting. Amy and David also honoured their fifth wedding anniversary in July. What a perfect year-long celebration. Congrat- ulations to both the parents and very proud Nanna. Volunteer appreciation night, hosted by the Agricultural Society for all those who do their best for the betterment of the community, was held recently. The turnout was great with over 80 partici- pating. What a wonderful way to cel- ebrate our community. Knights of Columbus set new records,for donations in 2008 The international a fraternal ben- efit society, Knights of Columbus, announced this June that it set new records for charitable donations and volunteer service hours in 2008. The results of the Order's annual survey of fraternal activity for the year ending Dec. 31, 2008, indicate that total charitable contributions reached $150,036,865 — exceeding the previous year's total by more than than $5.1 million, despite the world the worst economic downturn in decades. Canada hand in the considerable figures, hosting numerous blood drives and lending thousands of volunteer man- hours to local initiatives. The chapter says its honoured to be one of the many local organizations contributing to. the Town of Goder- ich and surrounding area. Located at Parsons Court since 1992, the volunteers give thousands of hours per year to facilitate weekly bingos, special events, weddings as well as corporate, government and other regional agency meetings. As a result, the V . ghts say they've been able to offer considerable finan- cial assistance to a wide variety of services and charities, both through donation as well as the use of their facility. Two recent major donations were made to the CT Scanner for Huron County Campaign, along with the Maitland Valley Medical Centre de- velopment. . With their commitment to area healthcare, the Knights also pro- vide support to several annual Blood Drive clinics. The Knights are currently ready- ing their tables in anticipation of the coming 10th annual Chess Tour- nament, which will bring together more than 250 young people as part of their ongoing interest in the de- velopment of area youth. Debbie Bauer Shag Campbell of Dungannon and Jason Searson of Watford teamed up at the 48th Thresher's Reunion in Blyth on the 12th to cut a 9 inch cherry log in 7.4 seconds. Local girl, Jean Pent- land and Shag teamed up placing 2nd in the mixed class in 14.3 seconds. On the 13th, Jason Searson and Shag Campbell placed 2nd with a time of 13.6 seconds on ail 11 inch cherry log. Jean Pentland and Shag Campbell placed first in the mixed class with a time of 21.3 sec- onds. Jean Pentland won the bag tying five bags in 43.5 seconds. Wow! The Dungannon Revitalization effort has been granted funds for proceeding this fall with the Brand Development Project which Kerri Herrfort, (Huron County Downtown Revitalization Co- ordinator) - will direct. The focus will be on improving the first impressions of Southampton Street in an effort to attract business development to the vil- lage and slow traffic for the safety and well being of everyone. The funds have been granted by the Huron Business Development Mat- ters and from Ashfield - Colborne - Wawanosh Municipality. Everyone will be invited and hopeful- ly participate, in the Branding Project to ensure a collaborative and creative result. The goal for the Brand Launch is December and dates for the meetings will be announced soon. The Nile church has fun and coffee every Friday at 7 p.m. and Oct. 14 and each second Wed. of the month is quilt- ing and a pot luck lunch. Sunday Oct. 18 the Nile church is holding their beef supper starting at 5 p.m. The Nile/Dun- gannon U.C.W. will meet Oct. 20 at the Nile church beginning at 1 p.m. Recently in euchre; high white card, Jay McColl with 67 and Dave Sproul had 64. High pink card, Jane Glousher with 69 and Lillian Waters had 62. Lone hands was Jewel Plunkett with two. On Sept. 23rd, high white card was Clar- ence Allin with 71 and Tom Young was 2nd with 65. High pink card was Ade- line Allin with 66 and Jean Errington had 65. Lone hands, tied with 2 each, was George Errington and Alex Niv- ens.
