Bannockburn gets boosted by donation
A dedication ceremony was held on Sunday, October 4 to honour a donation of land by Ralph and
Eleanor Smith and family, of Goderich. The donation has created 6.49 hectares more of natural space
at Bannockburn Conservation Area. The Smiths are helping create a greener watershed future with
their gracious donation, according to Tom Prout.
Newsletter unveiled to educate and
prevent elder abuse in Huron County
signal -star publishing.
A. newsletter designed to help se-
niors and their caregivers in Huron
County ensure that they are protected
from elder abuse while getting the
most out of their golden years was
unveiled by the Huron Elder Abuse
Prevention Committee at the Betty
Cardno centre in Clinton last week.
The newsletter, entitled "Aging
with Respect and Care" will be dis-
tributed free inside the next edition of
theFocusnewspaper.
ShelleyDorey, chair of the Huron
Elder Abuse Prevention .Committee
and executive director of victim ser-
vices ofHuron County says their goal
in distributing the insert is to educate
local residents -about challenges se-
niors todayare faced with and the-re-
sowves available to make those chal-
lenges easier. " Inffonnation is power,"
she said. "So the more information
we can get to seniors and their care-
givers, the better?'
Dorey said that while elder abuse
may have been a taboo subject in the
past, as the population ages, it is im-
portant to bring the issues surround-
ing the topic to light.
"Huron County is a popular spot
for retirement, and as the demograph-
ic across Ontario is aging, these is-
sues have to come to the forefront,"
she said. "Elder abuse has existed for
a long time, but it's just beginning to
be talked about."
However, Dorey noted that the
group did strive to make the newslet-
ter an enjoyable read. "It's a mix of
serious issues, along with some more
fun stories," she said.
While the focus of the group is elder
abuse, they are using the newsletter to
distribute information on everything
from legal advice to Internet safety
to physical activity and nutrition tips,
as well as entertaining and insightful
personalstories from local residents
like this year's Huron County Senior
of the Year, Audrey Kerr
Kerr was on hand at the launch of
Great Cars.

the newsletter to share her perspec-
tive on aging. "It seems like just yes-
terday that Lwas a little girl,' said the
86 -year-old: "I always did like old
people...now I am one myself. We
should be thankful that we're allowed
to be seniors when you think of the
ones that don't get to."
In an effort to ensure that local
seniors and the people who care for
them have access to as much assis-
tance as possible, a guide to the re-
gion's caregiver's support services
and community services pertaining to
seniors is included in the insert.
The newsletter also includes some
sample brainteasers and exercises to
keep the mind sharp, provided by the
Alzheimer's Society.
Dorey said she is optimistic about
getting the information out to those
who need it. -"I think our goal of
reaching everyone in the community
will be reached."
