Well known local architect John
Rutledge will be the guest artist at the
Goderich Co-op Gallery during Octo-
ber.
Growing up in nearby Brussels,
John's favourite class was always
art. Later he trained for his career
at various colleges and universities
in London ,Ottawa, and Chichester,
England.
Yet John had grown up surrounded
by the beautiful old houses in his home
town and never forgot their beauty.

lished his own business in Goderich.
John has become quite an expect
on the various early building styles of
Ontario's pioneers. He notes that as
Canada was settled from east to west,
the buildings west of Kingston tended
to be a mixture of styles not a single
style as to the east of Kingston. He
researches thoroughly for a client who
wishes to restore a structure, some-
times working from old photographs,
in his effort to be as historically accu-
rate as possible.
Stop by the gallery to see this dis-
play as well as "Fakes and Forger-
ies" during October. A working artist
is always on duty, and the gallery is
open from 10 to 4, every day but Sun-
day. For more information, check us
out at www.gcgallery.ca.
Sallows hosts
trivia night
The Reuben R. Sallows Gallery is look-
ing for people who know a little about a
lot.
The gallery is holding its first trivia night
on October 16 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Mai-
tland Golf and Country Club in Goderich,
and registered teams are challenging others
to compete against them for the title of Sal -
lows Trivia Champions.
This event involves tables of four work-
ing together to answer 100 questions in all
matters of knowledge.
The questions range from local history to
pop culture, music, geography and all sub-
jects in between. With four people working
together on the same question, it is easier to
come up with winning answers.
People can put together a table of four by
registering at the Goderich Library and/or
the Reuben R. Sallows Gallery. Cost is $20
per person, with all proceeds going to sup-
port the development of the Gallery and its
exhibits.
The Sallows Gallery trivia expert has
drawn up the 100 questions, which will be
kept in total secrecy until Oct. 16.
At present, the Sallows Gallery is look-
ing for volunteers to help with the registra-
tion desk, collection duties and tabulating.
Those interested in helping with this fun -
spirited event can contact the Gallery by
calling 519-524-9261 or email sallowsgal-
lery@huroncounty.ca. This is a licensed
event, requiring participants and volunteers
to be over 19 years of age.
The projects currently underway at the
Sallows Gallery include a new exhibit that
went up the third week in September enti-
tled Fat Cows Wanted. It is a photographic
exploration of the livestock and barns of
this area and beyond between 1890 and
1937. This exhibit includes a gallery scav-
enger hunt and gallery educational activi-
ties centred on the theme of pioneer farms
for visitors, homeschoolers and school
groups to enjoy.
Just a heads -up for those planning on
competing, you might want to bone up on
some Sallows Gallery facts. A little birdie
whispered that Sallows may show up dur-
ing the evening, but he didn't say if he
might take the form of a ghost or one of the
trivia questions.
