The Huron United Way is trying
to one-up itself from last year, look-
ing for one dollar more than they
raised in 2008.
Executive director of the Huron
United Way, Ellen Balmain, was in
Goderich Friday to unveil the or-
ganization's 2009 capaign goal, as
well as introduce the new campaign
chair, Chuck Hall.
"It's been very good of him to do
this," Balmain said of Hall's deci-
sion to take the position.
The role of the United Way has
changed significantly over the past
few years, with the number of re-
quests for service increasing annu-
ally and still growing. Hall said it
presents a difficult situation, but not
an impossible one.
"I look forward to the challenge,"
Hall said. "We're hopeful we get
the continued support of the com-
munity, and that they contribute in
any possible way."
The United Way has set its sights
on $207,001 - one dollar more than-
their fundraising total from last
year.
Balmain said the organization is
- striving to keep up the same level
of support from the previous year,

despite the recession and economic
downturn. Now more than ever, she
said, those funds are needed even as
their principal donors face the brunt
of the province's job loss.
"A lot of our funds came from
blue -collared workers at the plant or
on the factory floor," she said. "Now
we're in a support role to them."
The announcement was made
at the Goderich Lr10 store, and
Balmain took the time to thank the
LCBO for their many years of gen-
erous contribution.
"You are one of our greatest sup-
porters," Balmain said.
Last year, the LCBO raised
$12,000 for the Huron United Way.
Toy Ride aims to collect
for Christmas Bureau

Motorcycle enthusiasts are being of-
fered the chance to take to the open
road and enjoy the vivid colours of the
season this month, and it's all for a wor-
thy cause.
The Huron Toy Ride is set to embark
on a weather -dependent route through
the winding county roads October 18 in
support of the Children's Aid Society
Christmas Bureau.
While the route has yet to be deter-
mined, organizer Donald Broadfoot
of Clinton says that long or short, the
event is an opportunity for area motor-
cyclists to "show they care."'
"If the weather is poor, we may fol-
low a short route," Broadfoot said. "If
it's a nice, beautiful day we will follow
a winding route through the country-
side."
He estimates the ride will last a little

more than an hour, and preregistration.
is not required.
"Whoever shows, goes," he added.
While the ride itself is a good way
to hit the open roads again before the
snow falls, Broadfoot says the benefits
will have a long reach within the com-
munity. Ride participants are asked to
bring in a new, unopened toy at the ride
kick-off point near the Canadian Tire
Gas Bar on Highway 8 in Goderich.
He's hoping to rally up at least 50
participants, but Broadfoot said there is
no limit to the number of riders, and all
are welcome.
Ride participants are asked to gather
at the gas bar at 12 noon, before the
ride takes off at 1 p.m.
The event will wrap-up at the A&W/
Crabby Joe's Plaza in Goderich.
