Coinciding with the national breast
cancer awareness month, the Alex-
andra Marine and General Hospital
(AMGH) Foundation has launched
its latest capital campaign.
The three-year Keeping Abreast
Campaign kicked -off around the
community this weekend, aiming to
raise $550,000 toward digital mam-
mography equipment that will bring
AMGH up-to-date with the latest in
breast cancer screening.
"It's the gold -standard in screen-
ing," said foundation executive di-
rector Heather Glenister.
. The Keeping Abreast Campaign
has been designed to address two
purposes. The first, said Glenister,
is to help keep AMGH abreast with
the newest breast cancer screening
technology available. The second, to
keep area women abreast of breast -
health.
The campaign aims to bring in
full -field digital mammography
equipment that enhances both the
quality of its slides, as well as the
delivery.
"This machine is [the latest in the
field]," said Glenister. "There is no
film, no nothing. Pictures are taken
right into the computer, viewable di-
rectly by radiologists."
"There is no threat of anything be-
ing lost."
The MAMMOMAT Inspiration
is a full -field digital mammography
system designed to meet the needs
of the patient, the user and clinician.
According to manufacturer, Siemens
Canada, new compression technolo-
gies, paddle design and mood light-
ing offer the latest in patient com-
fort.
The MAMMOMAT Inspiration is
said to be a future -proof solution for
stereotactic biopsy. and 3D imaging
using tomosynthesis.

mography allows us to take a very

high resolution image and transmit
it directly to immediate viewing and
storage in our department," Colleen
Maguire, manager of diagnostic im-
aging at AMGH has said through the
Foundation. "The advances in image
quality and resolution are substantial
as well, allowing us to see tumors
when they are only the size of a pin-
head. This will yield even earlier de-
tection and a higher survival rate."
One in every nine Ontario women
has a chance of developing breast
cancer at some point in her life if she
lives to be 85 -year-old. While there
is no way to prevent this type of can-
cer, finding it early dramatically in-
creases the rate of cure. The Ontario
Breast Screening Program is a key
part of the process. It's a program
overseen by Cancer Care Ontario
and is free to women 50 and older.
The Goderich site has seen an in-
crease from 17 per cent to 54 per cent
of eligible Huron County women
participating since the local program
began in 2001. If the number could
rise to more than 70 per cent, 40 per
cent more lives could be saved.
Having recently updated that ca-
pabilities of the program to cross-
reference and view film and digital
images, the next step to improve the
process is to become fully digital.
Over the past few weeks, the
foundation has established a steer-
ing committee, comprised of 10 area
women, who will take the reigns in
overseeing the project. In the New
Year, the committee plans to embark
on a series of speaking engagements
and fundraising events. While specif-
ic fundraising events have yet to be
established for early 2010, Glenister
said third -party fundraising has prov-
en powerful in the past.
"We're encouraging the communi-
ty to do third party events on our be-
half," she said, adding that this type of
fund generation was a driving force
toward the success of the CT Scan-
ner for Hu-
ron County
Campaign.
