Goderich has once again proven itself the pret-
tiest town not only in Canada, but across the pond
as well.
The town placed fust in the international compe-
tition of Communities in Bloom Saturday, October
2, at a celebration ceremony in Vaughan.
"Well, I think we were shocked and overjoyed
to say the least," said CIB Goderich chair, Shelley
Peet. "The competition is so stiff. Everyone who is
there is a former national champion."
Goderich was up against seven other national
champions in the international competition, in-
cluding: Westport, Ireland, Dyce; Scotland, Olds,
Alberta, Trail, British Columbia, Aylmer, Ontario,
Hampton, New Brunswick and White Rock, Brit-
ish Columbia.
"Pretty high praise to come out on top. That's for
sure," said Peet.
What made Goderich `bloom' more than any
other community was the strength of its volunteer
base, Peet said. One of the biggest praises from the
judges Saturday was for. the number of volunteers
that stepped up for the town.
"I think our volunteer base was the driving force
of our corimmunity," Peet said. "You need to have
that base of volunteers that are willing to go out
and get their hands dirty."
Goderich's volunteer committee was about 70
people strong, Peet said, and oversaw 60 gardens
throughout the town. Bolstering those numbers
(and results) was another year of outstanding com-
mitment from area service clubs.
"They're huge," said Peet. "The service clubs
provide not only financial suppoert but they are out
there in the gardens."
We are more than just Internet!
