Boys volleyball busy with pre. -season tournament schedule
The Goderich District Collegiate Insti-
tute (GDCI) Senior Boys Volleyball team
had a busy month participating in three
tournaments before they play their first
league game. Despite the departure of
some of their starting line, and the retire-
ment of head coach Chris Connor, the boys
look strong early on in exhibition play.
The Senior Vikes headed to Stratford on
September 12 and easily defeated Stratford
Northwestern, Mitchell and St. Anne's.
They split sets with Ingersoll DCI, and
eventually lost in the semi-finals to two
time defending 'AA' OFSAA champions
Eden from St. Catharines. The team used
the tournament to work on their passing
and defence and came away with some
strong "lessons learned."
At the 30 -team Fanshawe College `Over-
kill" Boys Early Bird tournament, the boys
had the early season success they were
looking for. They held their own against
'AAA' Oakridge, defeated Kincardine
twice, and swept Holy Name, and Inger-
soll. The team rolled over John Paul II to
win the right to advance to the Tier II divi-
sion finals. In the finals, GDCI met up with
London Central and defeated them in two
straight sets 25-17, 25-15 to capture the
Tier II division championship. The success
at the Fanshawe tournament was an "entire
team" effort, with solid setting displayed
by veteran Aaron VandenHeuvel and rook-
ie Tyler Durst. Attacks were successful in
part by the consistent

kill Classic tournament, and were met with
some stiff competition. Battling schools
with populations at least twice the size of
GDCI proved to be difficult for the Vikes
to handle. Despite this, the team held their
own and stole sets from difficult schools.
They once again faced Eden High school,
and this time the scores were much closer,
and were ahead both games before giving
the victory to their opponent.
At both the Fanshawe and Waterloo
tournament, the MVP award was given to
outside attacker Zach Doherty who made a
clear impression he was a force to be reck-
oned with. Doherty is returning for his sec-
ond year on the Senior team, after having
spent part of the summer at the OVA High
Performance Centre in Toronto honing his
skills with some of the province's best U18
athletes.
With the return of Captains Joel Doherty
and A. - ion VandenHeuvel, along with Josh
Nicol -Macdonald, Sean Dawson, Spencer
Jones, Anthony Alcorn, Tom Dawson, Teil
Pitblado, and Jesse Willis, the Vikes are
banking on another successful year with
solid experience under their belt.

for much of her success.
"I definitely want to thank [Lew-

me out," she said. "I wouldn't be
here without them."

Feagan, who is playing defense
for Western, thanks Ray Lewis as
the main reason for making the
team.
"Mr. Lewis taught me every-
thing I know," she said. He came
up three times a week to help me
train, and helped me a lot."
On playing against old team-
mates, Feagan summed up her
thoughts in -one sentence;
"I love it, especially when we
win and get bragging rights."
