Goderich took the match 3-2 thanks to a shoot out goal by Brett Phillips. The three stars of the game were goal - tender Derek Mitchell, Shawn McColl with one goal, and Brett McGuiness. The game was rough, as both teams struggled with penalties early on. God- erich's Tyler Durst capitalized on a an assist by Thomas Bedour less than ten minutes into the game to put Goderich on the scoreboard. Hanover answered with their own goals with less than five minutes left in the period. Both teams' goals were scored on the power play. The second period was tamer than the first, with fewer penalties. Hanover took the lead in the second with an extra attacker on the ice due to a yet -to -be -called Goderich . penalty. The goal was scored with approximately five minutes left. Entering the third down by a goal, Goderich fought hard, and turned the tables on Hanover by scoring their own extra -attacker goal, forcing over -time. In the shootout, Phillip's goal was the only one to be scored. General manager Ken Crawford says that there isn't any one player to thank for this showing, that it's all in the team. "It was a real team effort, he said. And the coaching staff did great," he said. Crawford was pleased with the entire team effort, saying that this is a new brand of different and exciting hockey thanks to the changes they've made. He also said that the rookies on the team are really stepping up and showing what they can do. Goderich will take this win against the Hanover Barons and hopefully build on it, as they play Hanover twice on the weekend. On Friday, October 2, they travel to Durham to take them on, and on Sunday, Oct. 4 they host the Barons at the Memorial Arena at 2 p.m. Saturday Oct. 3, the Sailors will take to the ice against Kincardine at the Mai- tland Rec Centre at 8 p.m. c e sk W fid`= a' Attention r dms; .a 8, coacies and pY la ers ockey season is back and we want to hear from you.
