Huron follows Ontario's lead on vaccines
The Huron County Health
Unit is following Ontario's rec-
ommendations about offering
seasonal and H1N1 vaccines in
phases.
Ontario Chief Medical Offi-
cer of Health Dr. Arlene King
announced September 24 that
there will be three phases of
providing vaccines. The first
phase, in October, is offering
seasonal vaccine to people 65
years of age and older as well
as to residents of long-term
care facilities.
The second phase, expected
in November, is to offer the
H1N1 vaccine. The vaccine is
going to be available to whoev-
er needs and wants it. Because
the vaccine will not all be avail-
able at one time, H1N1 immu-
nization will be offered first to
the priority groups identified
by the Public Health Agency of
Canada.
The third phase, expected in
December and January, is to of-
fer seasonal vaccines to every-
one who is six months of age
and over.
The Huron County Health
Unit is holding seven clinics
around the county beginning in
mid-October. They will be spe-
cifically for seasonal flu vaccine
for people 65 years of age and
older. The clinics are listed on
the health unit's website: www.
huroncounty.ca/health and will
be advertised in local papers.
People 65 and over can also
get their free flu shot from their
physician's office.
Huron County Medical Offi-
cer of Health, Dr. Nancy Cam-
eron, says it is very important
for older adults to get their sea-
sonal flu shot.

"Common sense will pre-
vail."
That was the final word out
of council regarding a tempo=
rary sign for the Huron Tract
Spinners and Weavers Guild's
annual craft show at the Huron
County Museum.
The guild is requesting signs
be posted at the small park at
the intersection of Highway 21
and Britannia Road as well as
at the railway tracks crossing
Huron Road.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt was
notably amused when the item
came up for discussion, as in
the previous sitting of council, a
sandwich board sign was voted
down for temporary placement
along Victoria Street, north.
Councillor Heather Lyons
expressed her support for the
sign and the sale.
"I definitely want to support
this activity," she said. "We
need to do what we can to get
them a permit."
Clerk -administrator Larry
McCabe advised council the
zoning in both proposed loca-
tions was not correct for the
type of signage.
Gail Chrysler, writing on
behalf of the guild, informed
council that, pending permis-
sion, the signs would be erect-
ed October 31 and monitored
daily until the craft show, No-
vember 7 and 8.
After some discussion, coun-
cil decided to try and find a
more fitting location for the
signage, with Coun. Hurd add-
ing that common sense must
prevail.
more susceptible to serious
complications and hospitaliza-
tion from seasonal flu infec-
tion," she said. "We very much
encourage older adults to get
immunized."
The health unit will be orga-
nizing H1N1 flu clinics when
the vaccine becomes available,
expected in November.
