Horticultural Society enjoyed full summer of activities
What a summer it has been. Goderich
and District Horticultural Society were
not idle over the summer months.
At the Arts and Crafts Festival we
had an information booth and a draw
for planters.
A sincere thank you goes out to Ca-
nadian Tire, Pondsview, Colborne
Bed and Breakfast and Luann's flow-
ers for your wonderful donations to the
prize table.
The winners of the draw were Shir-
ley Hulley, Sandra Billson, Barb Picot
and Eric Coombs.
On August 18, we had our potluck
picnic and good weather as well as
good food was the fare for the day. We
had guests from Lucknow, Hensall,
Clinton and Auburn clubs. The win-
ner of the 50/50 draw was Lois Smith.
Other winners were Andrea Feeley,
Jean Whitby, Karen Redmond and
Mike Faulkner.
After the picnic we enjoyed an eight -
garden tour. A special thanks to those
who opened their gardens for us, San-
dra and Roger Goddard, Lynn Bish-
op, Cindy Fisher, Helen Riehl, Nihna
Reynolds, Beth and Bob Marshall,
Vince Smith and Helen and George

Sager.
On Tuesday September 15, we held
our first members perennial exchange.
Many favorites were shared and good
homes were found for all.
Our guest speaker was Inga Mar-
shall, from Hummingbird Haven Gar-
den Design. She spoke of the impor-
tance of having a plan for your garden
before you plant. Also, invasive plants
should be planted in pots with the bot-
toms removed.
Mulch is a gardener's friend and will
hold moisture and keep down weeds.
Do not mix the mulch into the soil.
%ae%Horjzonsc5
Try not to disturb the soil in the
beds, as this will make it easier for the
weeds. Hardy, drought -resistant plants
are best and will help conserve water.
A balanced garden will afford flowers
all summer and also all season enjoy-
ment.
Fall interest plants leclude mums,
northern sea oats, tiger -eyed sumac,
burning bush, perennial hibiscus,
black-eyed susans, hydrangeas and au-
tumn glory sedum.
On October 20, Chris Moore will be
our guest speaker. Everyone is wel-
come.
