Vikings take Blue Devils by the horns on home court
signal -star staff
The Goderich District Colle-
giate Institute (GDCI) girls basket-
ball program was out in full force
Wednesday, September 16, with
both the junior and senior teams
taking landslide- victories over
Mitchell District High School.
First up were the senior girls,
who shook off a slow start- to take
the Blue Devils 40-17.
Courtney McDonald nabbed re-
bound after rebound, leading the
Vikes on the scoreboard- with 12
points - five baskets and two from
the foul line.
Rachel Sowerby had the hottest
hands of the day from the free-
throw line, sinking three of three to
add to her seven -point tally.
The Blue Devils were continually
stymied by the Goderich defence,
who were quick with rebounds and
turnovers, as well as making plenty
of scoring opportunities.
The Devils trailed 7-22 at the
half, giving up a large number of
bonus shots resulting from a flurry
of fouls.
In the junior match, Jayme Aus-
tin scored an explosive 15 points to
lead the Vikes to a 33-9 victory.
Hayley. Bowler -Cooke racked up
seven points in the game, which
saw the Blue Devils score only
four points in the first half and five
in the second.
The Vikes' lineup saw a number
of second -year players take to the
court under the direction of coach
Ryan Wilkie.
The Vikings travel the bumpy
road to Clinton to take on St.
Anne's today, Sept. 23.
