Goderich's Deryk Whitehead (above) has a shot deflected during the Radars -
Pirates exhibition Sept. 19. However, that didn't stop the veteran Pirate from getting

It was a high -scoring night for the God-
erich Pirates Saturday, as they toppled the
Clinton Radars 12-3 in the first of four ex-
hibition matches for the senior 'A' team.
Deryk Whitehead led the scoring with a
natural hat trick and an assist.
Sean Burton was close behind with two
goals, three assists, and new player Mark
Duckworth notched a goal and, four as-
sists in the night. Duckworth is a former
Junior 'C' Sailor.
Adding to the scoring were Dave Mer-
riam with one goal, three assistg and im-
port Scott Jamieson with two goals, one
assist.
The Radars fielded an extremely short
bench for the night, and general manager
for the Pirates, Trevor Bazinet, said the
home team was happy to help them out.
"They were nice enough to come play
us with a short bench," he said. "Their
whole lineup was full of rookies besides
one guy."
The Pirates' lent the Radars Chris Dola-
ge and Josh Liddle for the night, a move
which Bazinet said allowed all the Goder-
ich players more ice time.
"It helped us out because we didn't

This year, the Pirates have a good head
start on their lineup, with 21 players al-
ready signed on. Adding to the new local
talent is Curtis Muxlow, and recent ar-
rival in Goderich Shawn Fishback brings
the team some much-needed size at 6'2"
and 295 pounds.
The Pirates have also signed Dave Gray
of Grand Bend - a former Hensall Sher-
wood.
"He's really impressed us so we signed
. him yesterday," Bazinet said.
Returning to the Goderich bench is de-
fenceman Mike Gillen.
"Our defence is great," Bazinet said.
"We're happy with what we've got now."
The entire 2008-09 team is back this
year, so there will be less adjustment time
on the ice and some good guidance for
those new to the Pirates bench.
"This is the first year in a long time
we've got everybody back," Bazinet said.
"We haven't had this many guys sign be-
fore this early in the season"
The Pirates have two more exhibition
games against 'AA' champs Saugeen and
a third against Ripley before their regular
season starts.
