The Goderich Vikings field hockey team opened their 2009 season right where they left off, earning a 3-0 victory over the visiting St. Anne's Eagles. The game was

her debut with a pair of goals for the Vikes. Solid play from midfielders Danielle Bean (above right) and Kelsey Dougherty (above left) helped netminder Jaden Mitchell
earn the shutout.. The Vikes play at home Wednesday against Mitchell at 2p.m. and Listowel at 4:30p.m.
Penalty shot seals Sailors' 4-3 win over Mount Forest

With a finalized roster and renewed de-
termination, the Goderich Jr. 'C' Sailors
took to the ice at the Maitland Recreation
Centre on Friday September 18 for their
home -opener against the Mount Forest Pa-
triots.
With a late -third -period penalty -shot
goal by Matt McClinchey, the Sailors were
able to triumph over the Patriots, 4-3.
The goaltenders for both teams were
evenly matched, with Goderich's Shawn
Gethke tying Mount Forest's Nick Horri-
gan with 31 saves over the match.
The first period saw little action on the
scoreboard, despite powerplays being
awarded to both teams.
The majority of the second period played
out similarly, with both teams fighting hard
to gain an edge before the third, but unable
to put a marker up there. With just over four
minutes remaining in the period, however,

Mount Forest rallied late in the period,
cutting the Sailor's lead to 3-2 by putting
a shot past Gethke with just over five min-
utes remaining,
Goderich's Matt McClinchey would
score on a penalty shot, putting Goderich
up by two goals again, however Mount
Forest would put one in with less than thir-
ty seconds remaining in the third.
With new contests, draws, events and
sponsons, this season promises to be a
memorable one for the Sailors, and an ex-
citing one if their first match -up was any
indication.
The Sailor's win was accented by several
new programs that they presented including
the Best Seat in the House contest, the Tim
Horton's blimp, and a chance for shooters
from the crowd to win a Hyundai.
