a
in Huron and Perth counties
October is in motion month in Huron
and Perth Counties. Residents are en-
couraged to find ways to be "in motion".
Community partners from recreation,
health, education, and workplaces are or-
ganizing events across the county to help
residents make physical activity a part of
their daily lives. Many local recreation
centres are offering free activities for
people of all ages.
The goal is to encourage children and
adults to be active for 30 minutes at least
five days a week to improve their health.
Co-chair of the in motion group, Aly-
cia Collins, says people live busy lives
and it can be hard to find the time to be
active.
"We all know how easy it is for our
exercise plans to get derailed. But what
commitment is more important than our
health?" she asked. "Try taking 15 min-
utes of your lunchtime to go for a brisk
walk. Or do floor exercises while you
watch TV. Build physical activity into
your daily chores."
Collins says it's important to discover
your own reasons for wanting to improve
your health through physical activity — it
might be because you want to sleep better
or generally feel better about yourself.
A list of events can be found at www.
hpinmotion.ca. Collins says people can
download an In Motion bingo card for
ideas for the month.
Collins says in Huron County only
about half of residents aged 12 and over
are active enough for good health. More
than half of adults are overweight or
obese and heart disease is the number
one cause of death. As well, more than
one quarter of children are overweight or
obese. Collins says encouraging people
to be in motion can help address some of
these concerns.
Low water advisory fAusable
The Ausable Bayfield Water Response
Team (WRT) has issued its first low-water
advisory for 2009. It is the first low water
advisory the team has issued since 2007.
The team announced that a low water ad-
visory has been issued for all watercourses

in the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Au-
thority (ABCA) watershed based on a
combination of the three-month precipita-
tion indicator and the monthly stream flow
indicator. Three-month precipitation values
across the watershed are below the Level
1 threshold indicator of 80 per cent 'of the
normal amounts, with the exception of the
Bayfield River watershed, according to the
WRT. Precipitation amounts over the entire
watershed ranged from 50-80 per cent of
normal for the month of August. Precipita-
tion amounts were also similar in July.
Stream flows have been close to nor-
mal throughout the early part of the sum-
mer, but August stream flow measure-
ments have shown a recent rapid decline
throughout both the Bayfield" and Ausable
River watersheds.
The area has only begun to see the impact
of dry weather on local watercourses since
mid-July.
Stream flows have sustained themselves
through the first part of the year thanks to
a very wet 2008 and a winter which saw
several large snowmelt events," said Alec
Scott, ABCA Water and Planning Man-
ager. "These conditions were conducive to
groundwater recharge, and were significant
enough to provide groundwater storage that
supported baseflows in streams well into the
summer."
The continued stress associated with the
low amounts of precipitation experienced
throughout the summer has caused stream
flows to drop considerably through .august.
Stream flows in the Bayfield River water-
shed, and much of the Ausable River water-
shed, are only about 30 per cent of the low-
est average summer month flow.

is available on the website of the ABCA at
