Dogs in need of homes at shelter Denny Scott signal -star staff Driving down the lane to Bow Wow Rescue, you can hear the populace of pets being housed long before you can see it. Owner Michele Layton says that local shelters and rescues are simply running out of room for dogs. "Some times you don't have many [dogs], other times you have too much, but since the economic down -turn, we've had more than normal," she said. Layton has nine dogs up for adoption at Bow -Wow Rescue. She has run the non- profit shelter since 2000, and continues to do it for the love of the dogs. "I fostered for other rescues [before I opened], and I enjoy it," she said. "I feel bad for the dogs, because they don't de- serve to be in the situations they are in." Layton's current list of adoptable dogs includes German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Shar Peis, Nor- wegian Elkhounds and Flat -coated Re- trievers. Layton's shelter provides other local rescues with a relief from over -flow. Potential adopters have to meet with Layton prior to approval because too many times animals come back after the owners find the pet isn't suited to them, or that they can't afford it. "[Pets get returned] after people figure out the price. You get a cute little puppy, then you figure out it costs money to feed them and money to care for them," Lay- ton said. "Vet bills cost money, and people don't realize how much it costs to have pets fixed." Layton, who supports the shelter through fundraisers, recently held a car -wash at the Goderich Shell Station, and is planning a Bowl-A-Thon at Goderich's Little Bowl on October 24 to help her with costs. "I get help from Pet Valu [for food] and the vet, but it still costs money to keep this place going," she said. Anyone interested in providing a home for any of the pets she fosters can find her online at www.petfinder.com/shelters/ ON284.htm1, or call her at 519-482-3642.
