Author and Goderich Councillor Paul
Elgie shares his faith with readers in his
first book, Choices: How to choose
positive decisions and live and exciting,
joy -filled and successful life.
He said the reason he decided to self -
publish a book was to spread a simple
message that has helped him change his
life.
Twenty-five years ago, he and wife,
Marilyn, became lay -preachers for the
United, Presbyterian and Anglican de-
nominations. It was then, he said, the
LGS formula was first discovered by
him.
No two people are created with the
same gifts, he said, and it's the respon-
sibility of the individual to recognize,
develop and share their talents to en-
rich the lives of those around them.
"I believe each person is here on Earth
with certain talents which nobody else
has," he said. "They have never lived
before, they are living now, and they
will never live again.
"You are created you."

The book is divided into four sec-
tions: Choices, Forgiveness, Freedom
and Fulfillment.
The way to fulfillment is the forgive-
ness of self, development of our talents
and using our gifts to help the people
around us.
To forgive others, said Elgie, requires
one to forgive themselves. It is not al-
ways easy to do, but can be life -altering
when it happens.
"Many times we hold grudges and
harbour bitterness," he said. "We must
clear our minds and then use our talents
to help others."
A learner from experience, Elgie
knows first-hand how difficult yet re-
warding forgiveness can be.
After a heated argument with a close
friend, Elgie said he kicked the man
out of his house. The journey to for-
giveness then began for him, he said.
"I -felt so bad, I prayed to God, 'What
do I do?' he recounted. "I was ashamed
of myself."
Elgie said he decided the only thing
to do was walk up to his friend's door
and apologize, regardless of the conse-
quence.
"I apologized profusely, not knowing
if he would slam the door or smash me
in the nose or what," he said. "He and
I have been the best of buddies ever
since. I helped him with my talents and
he helped me with his."
As with Elgie'sown example, human
nature tends to obstruct the divine call,
however, that is where he stresses the
sharing of talents can make stronger
bonds both between people and with
God.
"I've come through a lot in my life,"
he said. "And one of greatest things
you have to do is forgive."
Every choice a person makes through-
out their_ lifetime affects not only the
self, but a person's family, friends,
neighbours and the world around
them.
"You have to think carefully to use
your talents wisely to help other people
less fortunate than you are," he said.
"We're human and what I'm saying is
do your best, go that extra mile and ask
for advice from other people whom you
respect."
And of course, he said, no man is an
island.
"Nobody can do it alone. You have to
have the help of other people, faith and
love and hope."
Elgie has a bachelor of arts from the
University of Western Ontario, as well
as a bachelor and masters of education
from the University of Toronto.
