To those in the service club
community who knew him, and
everyone did, he was considered
the consummate Lion.
From serving as the District
Governor and Region Chair, to
organizing local television bingo
and avidly supporting the Guide
Dog Program, Mel Bogie served
the Lions Club of Goderich for
over 40 years in distinguished
fashion.
Bogie, 74, passed away Sunday,
September 13 after a short battle
with cancer.
A local businessman who op-
erated his own fuel business for
many years, he also drove truck
for local operators.
Perhaps recognizing the poten-
tial in the young recruit, Lions
Club President Bill Hanly recalls
that Bogie was invited to a club
meeting by a member and ended
up on the membership roster him-
self the same evening.
"He was certainly a real Lion.
He was a living example of our
Lions' motto: We serve," Hanly
said. "He was ready to help any-
one in the club and he was always
the first Lion to volunteer if there
was something to be done."
There was always work to be
done and it seemed that Bogie
was always in the middle of it.
Whether it was to lend a helping
hand to a new club initiative in
the community or to offer his ser-
vices to the greater Lion move-
ment, Bogie did, indeed, serve.
He joined the Goderich Lions
Club in 1967 and served faithful-
ly for over 40 years. He was the
club's president in 1987-88 and
he went on to work in the district
and served as both Zone and Re-
gion chair.
He became Lions District Gov=
ernor in 1990-91, presiding over
Lions affairs in the region from

Mel and Dorothy Bogie of Goderich led a group of Goderich Lions
Club members on a walk to the Candlelight Restaurant on April 23,
the final leg of a 260 -kilometre journey that raised $20,000 for the
Lions Foundation and its vision and health programs. Behind the

Orangeville in the east to Wiarton
in the North. He was, according
to Hanly, the "only born and bred
Goderich club member to be Dis-
trict Governor."
Most recently, Bogie and his
wife, Dorothy, were involved in
a personal walk campaign, hiking
to the site of towns and villages
with active Lions Clubs, to raise
funds for Lions Foundation work
and the Guide Dog Program. The
couple logged 260 km in their
trek that challenged 16 Lions
Clubs in the area to raise $20,000
for the Foundation and its Canine
Vision Guide Dog program which
provides dogs for the visually and
hearing-impaired, the disabled
and those who suffer from sei-
zures.
