There is a seat with your name on
it inside the Royal Canadian Legion
Branch 109 next week, even without a
membership.
Sept. 20 through 26 boasts a packed
itinerary for the non-profit Canadian
ex -service organization as it opens its
doors again during the annual Legion
Week celebration.
An open house, community luncheon,
mega meat extravaganza and even a
splash of karaoke and a no -talent tal-
ent showcase are all on the list at the
corner of Kingston and Stanley Streets
over the course of the six-day event.
Legion Week is designed to inspire
support for those currently serving
their country, and those who have done
Iso in the past. Branch president June
Pyette said we live in a community of
overwhelming support of the Legion
and its activities, and she expects the
week-long salute to soldiers will be
filled with friendly faces.
It all kicks off with the long-standing
Decoration Day Ceremony at the Mait-
land Cemetery. Bus transportation will
be provided from the Branch at 1:15
p.m., and after the formal proceedings
the Ladies' Auxiliary are hosting a Le-
vee at 109. Other Legion Week high-
lights include Mixed Euchre on Tues-
day, Sept. 22 beginning at 7:30 p.m., a
soup and sandwhich luncheon and open
house Sept. 23 from 11:30 a.m. to 4
p.m. and a karaoke and No -Talent Tal-
ent Show at 7 p.m. Sept. 24.
"Last year we laughed ourselves sil-
ly," Pyette said. "It's anything goes— I
think we have a skit to look forward to
as well as a performance by The Bag
Ladies'."
All are welcome to take part in the
talentless portion of the evening, and
pre -registration is not required.
On both Sept. 25 and 26, Pyette said
"don't miss the chance to bring home
the bacon" during the Mega Meat Draw
beginning at 5 p.m. For something a
little lighter, she suggests grabbing a
helping during the Friday evening Fish
Fry from 5 to 7 p.m. For a full event
listing, see the ad on page 21.
Along with being an important cor-
nerstone of freedom, service and re-
membrance, the Royal Canadian Le-
gion is also widely known as a place
to meet and unwind. Historically the
Legion hall was the social centre of
many Canadian towns. This was es-
pecially the case in the provinces with
severe restrictions on the sale of alco-
hol, rules the legions were generally
exempt from.
With more than 400,000 members
worldwide and counting, membership
includes people who have served as
current and former military, Royal Ca-
nadian Mounted Police, provincial and
municipal police, direct relatives of
members and also affiliated members.
It was founded in 1925 as the Canadian
Legion of the British Empire Services
League and was incorporated by Par-
liament in 1926. In 1962, Elizabeth II
gave the Legion the right to affix the
word "Royal" to its name.
